Aloe
Leaves: fleshy leaves up to 2 ft long that are light green on both sides with spiny teeth on the edges. they are cool to the touch. leaves are gelatinous when split open after 2 - 3 turns.
Flowers: red, yellow or purplish and are at the end of erect spikes
Stems: perennials with strong, fibrous roots
Habitat: outdoor in tropical regions, indoor in pots in colder regions
Harvest: outer leaves first, plant should have 3-5 turns growth, dry carefully.
Preparation: fleshy leaves are cut off at the stem and placed so the juice can drain into a tub. It juice is then concentrated by boiling until it becomes thick like syrup. On cooling, it is poured into jars until it solidifies.
Healer use: Aloe is a stimulating purgative that is usually combined with a carminative herb to allay its side effects of severe cramping. A dose takes 15-18 candlemarks to take effect, and it can also be used as a vermifuge. It is used to treat inflammations, mild burns, sunburns, eczema, gastritis, infections, fungal skin conditions, arthritis, constipation, headaches and it stimulates the menses. It is a very strong laxative and gel from the leaf can be used to style the hair.
Other uses: Aloe is also a purgative for runnerbeasts.
