Hyssop
Leaves: leaves have a mint-like, medicinal odor when crushed and are long, thin, hairless, and no more than 3-4cm long
Flowers: blooms in summer, and the plant is covered with dense spikes of blue or violet flowers
Height: evergreen shrub 1 - 2 ft high
Harvest: cut tops in summer and dry quickly in the sun
Danger: Use short term only. Avoid if pregnant. Avoid if you have high blood pressure or seizure disorders.
Healer use: A tea from the flowers acts as a mild expectorant, but it is sedative. The flowers are also used to treat the flu and respiratory ills. It is slightly astringent and can reduce perspiration, and the leaves are sometimes used in poultices to accelerate the healing of bruises. The essential oil should be used with caution, as it is hazardous, but it can be used to treat cold sores, bruises, and helps heal scars. This herb is suggested for us on children. It can also be used for asthma, preventing wrinkles, coughs, normalizing blood pressure, flatulence, digestive problems, anxiety, and as a gargle.
Cooking use: Flowers can be added sparingly to sweet and savory to add 'bite', and it aids the digestion of fatty meals. Leaves are also added to liquors.
Other uses: Oil from the stems is used in perfumes, and the leaves can be added to baths to help cleanse the skin.
