Pepper
Leaves: leaves are smooth, dark green, at attached by sheath-like footstalks to joints of branches
Flowers: small white flowers
Fruits: Globular berries that turn red when ripe, with wrinkled surfaces
Stems: round, smooth, woody stemmed perennial
Height: up to 6m
Healer use: Peppers are picked as soon as they turn red and allowed to dry in the sun. It is a stimulant, carminative, rubefacient, diuretic, and possible febrifuge. It is effective in treating colds and sore throats as well. It aids digestion and constipation. Infused oil is used for a warming massage to treat rheumatism and neuralgia.
Cooking use: The dried unripe fruit of this shrub is used as a spice and a food preservative. Ripe fruits can be eaten raw, or chopped into salads, stews, and soups. There are probably other varieties of peppers, some of which can be stuffed with meats and cheeses and baked.
