Sweetcane
Leaves: clump-forming rhizomes; perennial grass
Height: grows up to 6m
Healer use: Cane juice soothes symptoms of asthma and acts as an expectorant. It can be applied to wounds and boils to speed healing. The root is used as a diuretic.
Cooking use: Peeled cane is added to fish stews. Cane juice yields brown and white sugars, and the byproducts are made into molasses, syrup, and rum. Cane sugar is used to sweeten, flavor, and preserve foods.
