Tussilago (colt's foot)
Leaves: perennial with creeping rhyzomes
Flowers: dull yellow flowers in early spring turn into a dandelion-like seed head
Height: grows to 30cm
Healer use: Leaves are used to treat coughs, skin ulcers, and sores. Flowers reduce phlegm, inflammation, and stimulate the immune system. Use with caution externally - it contains small amounts of an alkaloid that can harm the skin, which is destroyed during boiling. All parts of the plant are good for coughs and bronchitis. Decoctions of the leaves treat colds, flu, and asthma.
Cooking use: Tender leaves are used in soups and salads.
