Early on month 6 apprentice Westni finds a curiously round rock on the beach and wonders whether it was man-made or natural. But she doesn't keep it for long as she and Seriand are running late, then Swift finds it, and the Hallmaster when he abandons it, and then another apprentice passes it on to the Headwoman, Ylisahn.

Ylisahn is pleased to see greenrider Zelle up and walking, impressed that the younger woman has got as far as the Dolphin Hall, and she gives her the round rock to take back to the Weyr. K'hetah visits the sleeping Zelle and ponders the origins of the stone much as all the other have.

On the restday at the end of the first sevenday of the month, the greenrider who caused all the trouble between Trellyn and Ednan comes to the Hall to find him. Although she asks around she can't find anybody who knows where he is, until she meets up with the person she least wants to - Journeywoman Trellyn herself.

Toward the end of the third sevenday Leisenn gets a letter from former Hallmaster Mosler who, it seems, has broken his leg and is having to stay at a tavern until it heals. He insists that the beer is not very good, but Leisenn, as well as being concerned for his safety, is not entirely inclined to believe him.
