Jylanya sat on her couch with a book trying to read and failing
miserably. It had been sevendays since Naton had asked her to marry him.
Yet Veerona still refused to even think about the possibility of their
home being shared with the big Master Dolphineer.
Jylanya had cried herself to sleep the first night and refused to let
the girl sleep with her. It was so hard to believe someone who'd
brought her so much joy could bring her an equal amount of pain. Yet
it was true.
The kicker was she understood why the little girl felt the way she
did. But as much as she might want it, the future wouldn't change
because of her stubbornness though it might be delayed.
A knock on her door made her snap the book shut and place it on the
table next to her. Unfolding from the couch she rubbed her throbbing
temples. "Yes," she said as she opened the door.
"Jyls?" Naton's brow furrowed slightly at her tired expression. "Do
you have a moment?" By which he really meant 'Is Veerona around, or
can we talk?', which showed in the way he peeked behind her.
"She's asleep," Jylanya said and motioned him inside then peeked down
the halls to make sure he hadn't been seen. It was late and not
entirely appropriate for him to be in her room at this hour but right
now she didn't care so much. She crossed the room and silently closed
Veerona's bedroom door.
Then she went back to the couch and sat down. She reached out her hand
to him and patted the couch next to her.
Tiptoeing inside, Naton quickly sat down next to her onto the couch,
putting an arm around her and pulling her close. After planting a kiss
on her head, he breathed in the smell of her hair. "How're things?" he
asked after a moment.
She turned her face into his shoulder and just soaked him in. Never in
her life had she been able to depend on anyone being there for her.
Tears welled in her eyes and she liberally soaked the shoulder of his
shirt. "Sorry," she whispered. "She doesn't understand and won't
listen. I really don't know how to handle it."
"Shh," Naton started stroking her hair as the tears came. "I'm in the
dark as well, but we'll figure something out. Vee and I got along
before, we can get that back." Right? He could only hope so.
"I hope so," she sniffed just holding on to the solid support of him.
She hadn't had the luxury of relying on anyone for most of her life
and she found just the fact that he held her incredibly comforting.
"But I'm going to marry you Naton. No matter how she feels about it
right now, we're going to be a family. I promise you that."
As he kept stroking her hair, Naton smiled in spite of himself. To
have someone loving him that deeply, that she wanted him to marry that
much, it meant the world to him. "We'll make it work. Maybe we can ask
Milga to talk to her? Maybe she can get through to her?"
"Possibly," Jylanya sighed. "I'm willing to try anything at this point."
"Good, I'll go talk to Milga, then," Naton nodded. "Or would you
rather?" He felt like he should be doing something and he felt he had
a good bond with Milga at least.
"You do it," she said. "But not right now." She needed him here for
the moment .To tell the truth she needed him here for always. "Maybe
between you and Milga she can find a way to trust we're not going to
leave her."
"I certainly hope so," Naton sighed. "I just don't know what I did
wrong. Before I asked if she liked having me around so much, she
seemed totally alright with it. Totally reasonable. And then this..."
"She's a child and female," Jylanya said with a tired smile. "Logic
has nothing to do with it.
"That smells like a trap, so I'm not going to answer that," Naton
winked, some of his usual playfulness returning. "We'll work it out."
She chuckled and nestled back into his arms. "I don't know how long I
can wait Naton," she sighed.
"Hmm, same here," Naton agreed wholeheartedly. "The day I can call you
my wife..." He trailed off meaningfully, with unspoken promises
sparkling in his eyes.
"Kiss me," she whispered and lifted her face.
