Zandan didn't bother to knock or greet. He just walked into Sarban's office
and dropped the
hides onto his desk. "The guard reports," he said curtly.
Sarban nodded. He'd look over them later. "So as you know, the Lord Holder
is going to the
wedding but plans to be gone far longer. In his absence, I'll be in charge.
I have two concerns..
mainly his own security as he and the Lady are on their trip but also the
children while they are
here with their fostermother." He knew Zandan would be thinking the same
thing.
"I wish he would let me come with him," Zandan grunted and pulled himself a
chair. "I'm going
to insist he'll take a guard with him. After what happened in Green Valley,
the security around
the main Hold is as tight I can make it, without locking you all up to a
dungeon."
"Understood. That's my worry too. I mean people kidnapping holders and
whatnot. Of course
our Heir is at Amber Hills but I'd rather not have to worry about the
children anyhow." Sarban
himself wondered how long it would be before Corofel would come home to
start working as
an Understeward which was usually the way of things to learn Hold
management. "And yes he
and I already spoke so there will be at least one guard going. You can
choose which one."
Zandan nodded. "I'll pick someone who's discreet and unobtrusive but who
won't let Corowal send him away."
"Speaking of which, did we ever find out who took Reven and what happened?"
Sarban knew Zandan had gone there and wondered about it since the holder
had been returned.
"No, although I have my suspects. But when Reven returned, I was kicked out
of there, not needed there any longer," Zandan said with obvious
frustration.
"Maybe you should go back...ostensibly to finish your report-to finally
question him. It's been long enough after the fact now that he shouldn't be
disturbed by relating his experience. Besides, it's obviously not good for
the territory's security to have kidnappers at large." Sarban frowned,
wondering why the man would be reluctant.
"You mean, make myself a pest?" Zandan grinned wickedly.
"It's doing your duty. Besides, if it was someone trying to make a land
grab, we need to know who it was.
And anyway, we should have had a full report. We gave the man time to deal
with his circumstances. Yet, he still hasn't shown up here to explain."
Yes, Sarban decided that bothered him. **Is he hiding something? What could
that be?**
"I'll dig into it," Zandan promised.
