Bryvin stood at the window watching rain fall on the bay. The gentle
rain was very good for the citrus crops even with the occasional wind
gusts. He found he cared more about that fact that he had in the past.
It was a rather startling transformation for a man who'd spent the
majority of his life without plans of staying put or putting down
roots. He smiled as he thought of his young wife. He hadn't really
planned for that either. Women had their uses yes, but she brought
more to the table than he had imagined.
But before he could really begin to proceed with his plans there were
a few more things he had to check off his list. Wife: check. Children:
he checked that box every night. Steward: not yet.
Despite the training he'd provided his underlings when he was the
Steward, none of them were near ready for the senior position. He'd
found that Holding took more of his time than he'd imagined Morin had
been spending. Yet, now he realized how much of his time and effort
had helped the former Lord achieve his ends. He'd resolved to find
someone for the position but thus far none of the men who'd presented
themselves had met his expectations. One more candidate this afternoon
though he didn't hold a great deal of hope.
"My Lord," the voice behind him announced. "You have another visitor."
"Send him in," Bryvin said without taking his eyes from the bay.
Eirock entered taking in the profile of the man who had not only saved
his life those many turns ago, but returned it to him tenfold with his
invaluable counsel. He wondered if the newly confirmed Lord Holder
would recognize him, though he seriously doubted it. It mattered not
whether Bryvin remembered. Eirock did and he would serve this man
loyalty to the end of his days in whatever capacity he could. Of
course he hoped that capacity was as Steward which would prove an
advancement in his own career as well as an opportunity to pay back
the debt he owed Lord Bryvin.
"Welcome to Sunstone," he said as he turned to face the latest
candidate. But he stopped and cocked his head. "Do I know you?"
One corner of Eirock's mouth lifted, "We have met, though one might
say in a different life. Many turns ago you saved the life of an
arrogant and foolish young man, little more than a boy really, who, as
fortune would have it, just happened to share the same enemies as
yourself at that particular candlemark in time." Watching for any sign
of recognition the dark-haired man continued, "Both then and now, I
answer to the name Eirock."
"Ah yes," Bryvin nodded. Then he waved the other man into a chair
across his desk. "So Eirock, tell me what you've been up to since last
we met." Then with a smile he added, "but only the legal part."
"Upon your advice, I gave careful consideration to what I truly
wanted and how I might realize those desires. I swallowed my pride
and returned to my uncle's hold at Echo Ridge taking up my position as
under steward, despite my differences with my stepfather who was still
Steward at the time. Tragically, he died from a runner fall
returning from the Hold one night. The body was set upon by
wild beasts. Most horrific," Eirock's tone was eerily bland and he
locked eyes with the Lord Holder, his lips lifting ever so slightly.
"I became Steward but as it turns out my uncle was not a good man.
You've most likely heard of the debacle with the stolen gemstones and
how he took his own life," this time Eirock did not curb his predatory
smile. "Wanting to distance myself from all of that I accepted the
Steward position at Sawtooth, which has prospered quite admirably over
the past few turns."
Bryvin's eyes crinkled slightly at the fate of the stepfather and then
even more as Eirock described some of the other happenings in his
life. "Interesting," he inserted once and then he leaned back in his
chair. "I did hear of the troubles at Echo Ridge," he nodded. "I think
perhaps you're the right man for the job here at Sunstone." He nodded
as if confirming the fact to himself. He had particular requirements
and a Steward could either make or break his plans.
He would take the time to be certain of course, before Eirock was let
into all his plans. But he'd had much the same experience when Morin
had hired him.
"Welcome to Sunstone," he held out his hand.
Eirock grasped the other man's hand in a firm grip, "I guarantee you
you've made the right choice. My fealty will never waiver, Lord
Holder."
"Make sure I don't regret it," Bryvin said softly. "I'll have the
Headwoman get you all set. We can meet tomorrow and discuss my plans
for the Hold."
