No Better Life

Characters: Wrayn
Description: Wrayn checks in with his dolphin partner after a day of teaching and studies
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 10, day 5 of Turn 3

Wrayn gave Ciayn good scratch. "Good day?"

"Day better, best when Wrayn swim," the dolphin answered.

"I know, and I would rather be with you too, but I have classes to teach and studies of my own."

"More fun play with Ciayn. Found man things. You should see."

Wrayn looked at the setting sun. "First thing tomorrow. What did you find?"

"Big boxes. Too big for little boat. Sink boat," Ciayn informed his partner.

"Hmmm. Maybe I should see if Trellyn could join us," Wrayn had been looking for a reason to get to know the senior journeyman better.

"Trell'n and Kibb play with us tomorrow? Good fun," Ciayn answered with an excited splash, soaking Wrayn completely.

"Good thing I was planning to swim anyway," he said. "I'll check with Trellyn, no promises. Nice report," he added throwing Kibb some fish.

"Wrayn come swim now?"

The tall man dived into the water and his dolphin friend was with him instantly. He took hold of Ciayn's fin and enjoyed a good ride before he let go to swim on his own for awhile. Wrayn enjoyed this time of evening, particularly when he was with Ciayn.

Before Wrayn had left the hall to journey, he had often swam with Ciayn. The hall had been at Topaz Hold then and Ciayn was from a different pod, but often visited. He had missed Ciayn on his journey, and when he returned to the Dolphin Hall to continue his studies, he had been thrilled to renew the friendship. Ciayn's pod leader had had a few reservations about their partnering. She wasn't sure whether either youth was quite mature enough. Eventually, she had agreed. Though he and Ciayn had only been partnered for a matter of months, the journeyman was already hard pressed to remember life without his slippery friend.

Reluctantly, Wrayn signaled Ciayn that it was time to return and accepted the ride in. "We'll swim tomorrow," he told the dolphin affectionately, giving him a final scratch and exiting the water.

"Tomorrow," the dolphin echoed before swimming away.

Watching his friend depart, Wrayn knew that there could be no better life.
