Eirock

As he approached the solar, Eirock paused at the sound of the lovely
contralto. Listening he wondered if he had the wrong room. He'd been
told that the seamstress he sought would be working here today after
seeing Lady Xeladrie. Talon chirped approvingly in his ear, enjoying
the song as much as his owner. Since the door was ajar, the Steward
pushed gently and noted the small form sitting with a dress in her
lap, doing some detailed stitching on the bodice. The sun having just
broken through the gray storm clouds shone momentarily on her reddish
brown hair lighting the kind, if rather plump, face.

Talon announced their presence with a melodic trill to accompany her
song. "Begging your pardon," he said politely. "Would you perchance
be Sophque?"

Sophque looked up with a smile at the sound of the firelizard song.
Then when she saw who it was immediately put her work to the side and
stood to drop a curtsey, "Sir," she said. "I am Sophque, how may I be
of service."

She had a beautiful smile, he noted before answering. "Well, I
understand you are an exceptional seamstress, and if you've time, I
would like to commission some new tunics. I do understand you're
doing some work for our Lady Holder and understand that must take
precedence."

"Yes sir," she nodded. "Fortunately the Lady's clothing is now in good
repair, so I do have some free time. Is there something particular you
need?" She was always willing to do a commission for the leadership of
the Hold. It often meant tips of several marks she could put away for
her daughter.

Pleased that she was free he nodded in response to her question.
Sawtooth had been only a minor Hold with very few important functions
to attend, but he anticipated things would differ here, and his
wardrobe needed updating regardless. "Yes, I need at least three
tunics of finer quality for special occasions and two pair of
trousers. I was hoping you might have a good recommendation on where
to purchase the fabric."

"There are several shops on crafter row. The weavers sell some of
their wares there but also the trader Taril has some very nice fabric
in his warehouse. Of course if you you wish special embroidery,I can
also do that with the proper silks." She smiled and dropped a small
curtsey.

"Very good. I shall acquire some and then we can make an appointment
for you to get measurements. We'll have to discuss the embroidery. I
want them to look stylish and refined without being ornate or
feminine," he explained.

"Of course sir," she nodded with downcast eyes. He had no way of
knowing the many many hours she'd spent on shirts and tunics for
Morin, nor that a great deal of his clothing had come from her
needles. While she was happy to work on the Lady Holder's wardrobe she
was quite familiar with the needs of the high ranking male.

He'd upset her somehow, though he had no idea which words might have
been offensive or threatening. Perhaps she thought he was questioning
her abilities when he'd commented on the embroidery. "Your singing
just now was lovely," he stated softly, hoping to ease whatever
insult he might have unintentionally offered.

She looked back up at him at the compliment. "Thank you," she smiled.
"I like to sing and my daughter certainly likes it." 'Morin had liked
it too,' she thought but of course she couldn't or wouldn't say
anything about that. As far as anyone knew she was a simple widow
caring for her daughter and earning her way with her sewing. That and
that alone would save both her and her daughter's reputations.

Pleased to see the lovely smile return to her face he replied, "She's
a lucky girl if she's your usual audience. Have you been at the Hold
long, Sophque?"

"All my life," she said, pleased that he thought to ask the question.
"My father is Lord Mor.... er, Bryvin's Orchardist. I'm sure you'll
meet him soon if you haven't already."

"I haven't yet, but I'm quite certain that I will." Eirock grinned.
"So you must know nearly all there is to know about the Hold. Perhaps
I'll pick your brain for knowledge while you take measurements for the
new clothes. A Steward should know all he can about his Hold."

"I could tell you stories," she grinned at her private joke but then
nodded. "I'll answer all the questions I can," she said.
