Description: Gautrek runs into Rethisa in the garden and an idea takes form.
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 11, day 1 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Zathris
Gautrek finished his meeting with the understeward, pleased with the
outcome, knowing his report about the trade between Hold and Hall
would be well received by the Hallmaster. He had also brought up the
prospect of a late spring or early summer wine tasting for the nobles
of Amber Hills. The understeward was going to bring the idea to the
attention of the Steward and Headwoman. He had suggested Gautrek tour
one of the gardens and consider it as a potential location.
Although the sun was shining, it remained quite cool outside. Being
early in the spring, there was still an occasional frost so the
garden had not yet begun to really flourish. The potential was
evident and the bits of green were encouraging. Gautrek was
envisioning how the tables might be arranged, and where the harper
might play when he noticed a tall form with pale hair standing next to
the fountain.
Rethisa loved the gardens. When she had lived with Verlow the herb
garden out back had been one of her only sources of enjoyment. Now
that she was able to freely enjoy the budding gardens at Amber Hills
she was considering starting a new herb garden again, one that would
not later be destroyed by her cold, calloused husband. Out of the
corner of her eye Rethisa caught movement and she glanced up with a
tentative smile, "Good day."
"Good day to you, my lady," he replied with a large smile of his own
and a slight bow, noting the brilliant green of the woman's eyes.
"Wonderful day to contemplate the coming of spring, is it not?"
"It is. After the cold and snow of this past Turn I am very much looking
forward to spring." Rethisa continued conversationally before
extending her hand, "My name is Rethisa, by the way. It is a pleasure
to make your acquaintence."
"I am Journeyman Gautrek, and the pleasure is mine, Lady Rethisa."
Though he knew nothing about her, he knew that the name given belonged
to the Lord Holder's sister. "I was just surveying the garden to
determine if it might not be a pleasant location for a small wine
tasting within the next month or so."
The simple courtesy of having a man address her as "Lady" served to
remind Rethisa how nice it was to be back amongst civilized people.
She vowed to never leave Amber Hills. "A wine tasting in the gardens,
what a lovely idea."
"I'm pleased to hear you say that. We've some new vintages ready to
release and I thought it would be a nice way to introduce them.
Particularly if we invited a Harper or two and served some nice
cheeses and possibly pastries. Just a small gathering mind you."
"Well, I could certainly see that we have the cheese and pastries, and
perhaps some seating?" Rethisa enjoyed putting together events and
hosting. It wasn't something she had gotten to do often over the past
eight Turns, but she still rememered the proper etiquette for such.
Gautrek's blue eyes sparked with enthusiasm. "That would be
marvelous! Though I must warn you, I only just brought this up with
an understeward today. I haven't exactly gotten the go ahead yet."
Rethisa's wagged her eyebrows at that, "Luckily I am the Lord Holder's
sister and I am pretty sure that I can get him to say yes. Not that he
would mind anyway."
"I could not hope for a better advocate. Who could possibly deny you?"
Gautrek replied flashing his toothy smile. "Tell me the type of wine
you favor and I will be certain it is part of the tasting."
"I am a fan of the dark reds myself." Although if truth be told,
Rethisa did not have very much experience with fine wines or liquors
as Verlow had simply bought cheap whiskey and other things of that
nature.
"Ah, a lady after my own heart." The vintner laid the flat of his hand
on his chest. "We shall have some very fine selections I assure you.
One that has been aging since the first turn the Hall moved here to
Amber Hills. It has a lovely supple and elegant flavor with ripe
berry and a nuance of dark klah balanced with a toasty oak. One of
our most exciting vintages in turns I think. Introducing it at this
soirée would be perfect."
Rethisa's eyebrows raised at the delicious description, "I look
forward to trying it, Journeyman. In fact, I look forward to this
entire event." The woman flicked a blonde of her platinum hair out of
her face, "Let me talk to Zathris and see when a good day will be.
Would I be able to find you easily at the Hall?" It would be nice to
get out of the Hold and visit anyway.
"Yes, if you ask at the Hall, I'm easily found. I will anxiously
anticipate your visit, Lady Rethisa. I'm very pleased that our paths
crossed today."
The lady smiled and dipped her head to him, "Likewise, Gautrek. I will
see you soon."
