Something was wrong but he didn't understand it. Everything about the
situation went against his experience and his training.
Standing at the foot of the bed, he watched as the old man had trouble
breathing. He had ordered for teas to be given to him with
a restorative that would open his airways and make breathing easier as well
as soothe the inflamed tissues. Despite his orders
and the medicine given, the man still could not breathe.
"Why is he nonresponsive? Is there something else wrong? Is it not enough?
Should I double the dose? Too much and it could overwhelm
his fragile system." Anger and irritation roiled through him. He wasn't used
to being wrong. Everything about this screamed wrong but Chupsin
couldn't figure it out. Leaning down, he used a tube to listen to he man's
chest. There was still congestion inside where there shouldn't
be any. "Shardit all."
Tourniquet sensed his frustration and the bronze chittered and rustled,
wanting to help, but not knowing what to do. The healer went
back and forth, deciding for now to up the dose. It was clear the man wouldn't
get better on his own and if he didn't try that, he'd probably
choke anyway so it couldn't hurt. Whispering instructions to the nurse
nearby to get the tea ready, he knew he'd come back to check in a few
candlemarks to see if it had made any difference though it would take a few
dosages before a profound difference would occur anyhow.
The man was quite old so his body wasn't in the best condition anyhow. He'd
probably die in the next few turns whether he got through
this or not so it wasn't the same as a sudden tragic death or that of a
young patient. If it wasn't something, it would be something else.
Chupsin wasn't worried about that. He was angry at being thwarted. He was
angry at the disease defeating his skill. That was unheard of
and the healer was taking it as a personal affront.
Scribbling notes on the Record hide, he put it back in its slot and then
walked back in the direction of his office.
Stennar was dropping in some reports and noted the expression on his face.
"Something wrong, Chupsin?"
"Aye. The man in bed nine is still having problems despite being dosed with
what he should have. He isn't responding normally."
He tried to keep his calm but the situation irritated him to no end.
"Yes, I've noticed," Stennar said, feeling a sharp stab in his chest. "Maybe
the herbs are too mild? Sometimes the weather and growth
conditions affect how effective the herbs are," he suggested. "There's also
the old lady in bed six, with heart problems, and she's not
responding to treatment either. It's in my last nightshift report."
"I know. She improved earlier though. Turns out there was a small infection
in her toe that was causing complications. So we had to treat
the infection before the heart issues. It was elevating her heart rate."
Turning his mind back to the man at hand, Chupsin looked up for a moment.
"So we gave him another dose. If not, we'll have to try a different
medicine."
Stennar just nodded with agreement. Actually, he was responsible that those
elders didn't respond to the treatment. Dosages he had been giving
them were smaller than they should be.
"So check on him in a few candlemarks and if that doesn't work, we'll need
to try something else." Chupsin was tired and it showed. It was time for
him to finish his duty and rest.
"Yes, sir," Stennar replied, like any smart, obedient younger healer would.
