Description: Saibra leads instruction on basic dragonhealing for the new group of Weyrlings.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 10, day 8 of Turn 7
Saibra was excited to be working with the newest group of Weyrlings.
She would have worked with the Senior Weyrlings as well but they were
already past the point of basic dragonhealing by the time she came to
Dragonsfall. Being able to personally work with Chioneth's hatchlings,
however, was especially gratifying.
"Good morning D'kere." She was glad that D'kere was holding the
lessons for this group of Weyrlings as she had not really patched
things up with Weyrlingmaster J'darin after their show down before.
Dealing with D'kere suited her just fine. He wasn't pompous, and he
understood his place and his job requirements.
D'kere was a bit nervous to have the Senior Weyrwoman joining him for
lessons that day. He was still rather new to teaching the Weyrlings
and the last thing he wanted to do was make a mistake in front of her,
he had heard how she came down on J'darin for the whole "Ninaine
Problem" and he certainly didn't want to get on Saibra's bad side. As
jovial as she could be, it also seemed that in the blink of an eye she
could be just as testy as a proddy gold.
"Good morning, Weyrwoman." He stood. "The Weyrlings should be on their
way any moment now."
"Excellent." Saibra smiled as she unrolled a large anatomical drawing
of a dragon and pinned it on the board behind D'kere's desk.
Z'then was eager to learn about this part. As Candidates, he'd asked
dozens of questions of the dragonhealers
when his chores involved assisting them. Those assignments were his
favorite, and somehow he always wound up with them - maybe a sign of
slight favoritism on the Headwoman's part, or maybe the dragonhealers
liked him enough to keep asking for him. Did they even have
preferences on their assigned helpers?
Truth be told, he really wanted to apprentice. But not being able to progress
past apprentice without Impressing had made him nervous about trying to
make any tie to their Craft a formal thing. He had not have wanted to
be just an apprentice forever.
Having always enjoyed helping Dyosha when she looked after the sick or
injured of the caravan, Ilyssia was greatly anticipating this lesson
and smiled broadly at Z'then as she entered and took a seat next to
him. Seeing the Weyrwoman only solidified the obvious importance of
the subject matter in her mind.
E'zar was not far behind the others, Chenreth had been particularly
moody about falling asleep as he felt he hadn't eaten _enough_, even
though E'zar had helped cram meat down the brown's gullet until he
feared the dragonet would burst. He raised his eyebrow a bit when he
spotted his twin sitting with Ilyssia. He had, obviously, heard about
Z'then's fight and the part that Ilyssia had played in it.
He thumped his brother on the ear as he passed, "Zennie." E'zar
greeted him by his old nickname as he took a seat at the table
directly in front of Ilyssia and Z'then.
"Hey Eth- E'zar." It would take him a bit to get used to that, just like
his own name was different.
"I'm excited about this class, are you?" He was looking at his twin but it
was directed to them both.
E'zar, who was half turned in his seat, gave a shrug, "I might be more
excited about it if we hadn't just listened to a two candlemark
lecture on," and here his voice took on the airy voice of the teacher
they'd had, "_emoootttionnnsss_ and feelings." He rolled his eyes. How
hard was it to understand what your dragon was feeling? It was a
pretty open bond between them and if you didn't want them to know
something then it was as simple as shutting them out, the same way he
use to shut out his mother when she would be on him about something.
"I'm looking forward to trying some of the sensing experiments," Z'then
said. "I heard that different Weyrlingmasters make you do crazy things."
Ilyssia had smirked at E'zar's description of their previous lesson.
She'd found it more informative that the older weyrling, but she felt
that he was right in that much of the bond was intuitive. "Crazy?"
she asked upon hearing Z'then's declaration. She hadn't been in the
Weyr a month yet so she didn't have near the background as the twins
E'zar cocked an eyebrow at Z'then, waiting to hear what sort of crazy
things the Weyrlingmaters might make them do. While they chatted and
waited for the rest of the class E'zar glanced at their Weyrwoman, who
was still making conversation with D'kere at the front of the room. At
least she wasn't bad to look at, and the glimpse of cleavage he could
spot from her v-neck tunic was another bonus.
"I heard chatter at lunch one time that his Weyrlingmaster made them
run an obstacle course blindfolded," Z'then said. "I wish we could do
something like that."
Ilyssia's eyes widened. "Well, that would certainly be interesting."
She glanced up toward D'kere and Saibra, not wanting to get called out
for chatting if they were ready to begin.
Personally E'zar didn't really like the sound of something silly like
being blindfolded and running around like a fool, but before he could
voice his displeasure a throat was cleared at the front of the room.
"Weyrlings," D'kere addressed the group now that they were all
gathered, "today we have the Weyrwoman with us to discuss dragon
anatomy. Weyrwoman Saibra is a journeywoman dragonhealer and therefore
the perfect pick for our guest instructor today."
Saibra smiled at D'kere's introduction, but quickly jumped straight
in, "Allright, everyone, you'll need out a blank piece of paper and
something to draw with. You can't be a dragonrider without knowing the
proper parts of your lifemate." Drawing a dragon and labeling the
correct places was something that Saibra had done frequently as a
Weyrling and as an apprentice dragonhealer. "I have drawn an example
on the board for you to follow."
There was a brief lull before the sounds of rustling paper could be
heard about the room. "I suck at drawing." E'zar murmured to Ilyssia
and Z'then as he glanced from his paper to the board, hopelessly
trying to replicate the outline of a dragon that Saibra had drawn.
Z'then's tongue poked out of his mouth as he carefully replicated the
drawing. His lines were a little wobbly but the shape was recognizable,
and he began to label the parts as well.
Quite unlike the twins, Ilyssia deftly recreated the dragon likeness
with sure, nearly artistic lines. She had always enjoyed drawing, but
hides and especially paper were far too valuable to allow a girl to
practice sketching so her opportunities had been limited. Dyosha had
once gifted her several pages and the girl had relished filling every
finger width of them. As she carefully labeled the dragon's anatomy
she thought of Gwynnyth and her corresponding body parts.
D'kere walked among the Weyrlings, pointing out where mistakes had
been made, or answering questions for those who were unsure. When he
stopped by Ilyssia's his brows lifted, "Very nice, Ilyssia." He
murmured, and then frowned when he saw what was on E'zar's paper, "You
might want to just start over, E'zar. That's resembling a cross-over
between a wher and a canine right now."
The man's comment shocked E'zar into a laugh, which earned him a
glance from the Weyrwoman, that he quickly turned into a cough and a
smirk, "Yes, sir."
Biting her lip to keep from giggling, Ilyssia tried to keep her focus
on what she was doing, though she couldn't help but dart a look in
E'zar's direction. He might be a tad bit arrogant but at least he was
able to laugh at himself and that was admirable in her opinion. She
glanced over at Z'then who seemed very intent on his assignment.
Interesting how the two brothers were so very different.
E'zar had just finished redrawing his deformed looking dragon when the
Weyrwoman began speaking again. "Now, we're going to take this drawing
and ......" As Saibra trailed off with further instructions E'zar
stifled a sigh. This was going to be a long lesson.
Z'then was thinking the same thing, but for a different reason. He was
hoping it would be easy and he could show that he knew all the
answers. He'd be happy if he could impress the Weyrwoman and the rest
of his class with his brain.
Ilyssia wasn't thinking of time at all, but of content and exactly how
much information would be provided them in this basic dragonhealing
lesson.
