Yriadha

As Yriadha knocked on the door, she was barely able to wait as Lord
Bryvin answered. It was an unexpected meeting, but the letter she had
just received gave her reason. Her face pinched with strain as the
knock was answered and she slipped in, hand clutching around the hide
with a white knuckle grip.

"Lord Bryvin…" Even her voice was strained. "My son…my Yarmel…he is
not at the mines." She held out the crumpled hide. "He was supposed to
be there last sevenday and the Captain there writes me and tells me
that he never arrived."

"What," he said in a puzzled voice and held his hand out for the
letter. Knowing something like this scene was going to happen had him
prepared with the proper concern and responses. "I'm sure it's some
kind of mistake Yriadha," he added with his brows together. He came
around the desk toward the Headwoman.

She pushed the hide towards him and it was clear that she was
desperately trying to maintain her composure, but was failing. "It's
not. The Captain is quite sure. Yarmel didn't arrive and I know he
wouldn't have abandoned his family. His wife is with child and they
were hoping for a boy. I know my son. He did his duty..." Her voice
trailed off. "We have to find him. I have to find my son."

He scanned the hide for a moment then dropped it on his desk and
stepped forward to wrap her with his arms. "We'll find him," he said
fervently. "I'll send out search parties as soon as threadfall is
done." He knew they couldn't go far as 'fall wouldn't end until late
and the day and there was a hurricane coming the next day. The skies
were darkening with the outside edges of the storm already.

She trembled in his arms, trying to keep her back straight. She didn't
break; she didn't cry as a rule, but his concern for her and his
warmth was nearly her undoing. "My son..." Her voice cracked. "There's
been Thread already...what if...what if it's too late, Bryvin? His
family, there's no one to care for them now. " Her eyes closed tightly
and finally a tear leaked down her cheek, just as quickly brushed
away.

"Hey," he said softly. "We're not sure yet." He kissed the top of her
head. "The dragonriders are very good, not much ever reaches the
ground. He might just be injured and hiding. That is what the
searchers will look for. Besides, I'll take care of his family if it
turns out otherwise. He was on my service after all." His eyes were
hooded to prevent even a minor glimpse of duplicity as he held her
close. "We'll find him Yriadha."

She rested against Bryvin, swallowing hard as she nodded. "If
something happened to him, Bryvin..." Her head laid on his shoulder,
taking in his comfort in a rare display of vulnerability. Her brow
furrowed. "He had a disagreement with his sister. Taril...he could
have done something. He has a reputation at the docks." She lifted her
head and looked into Bryvin's eyes. "Please, my Lord, would you check?
Would you make sure that that man didn't hurt my son?"

Knowing beyond a doubt that Taril was not at fault this time was all
he needed and he tilted her head up with a finger under her chin. "I
promise you I will look into it. If there is any evidence that he is
responsible, he'll be dealt with. But first let's find Yarmel, maybe
he can tell us what happened. Alright?" Holding out hope for her was
cruel but it served his purpose in this case.

She let him tilt her head and slowly nodded. She trusted that Bryvin
would do as she asked. Had she not served him well? He had no reason
not to. "As soon as possible?"

"I will take care of you and your family Yriadha. But I can't promise
immediate action without proof. First we find Yarmel and then if there
is evidence of foul play we'll find the perpetrator, that I promise."
He raised his hands to cup her face. "You are important to me," he
said more softly. One thumb stroked her temple as he looked sincerely
into her eyes.

"Thank you." Her voice was shaky as she tried to gather back her
composure in the face of possible loss. When he cupped her face, the
light, soft touch surprised her. Even her husband when he had lived
had not touched her so gently. Yriadha laid one hand over his and
swallowed. "Show me."

He smiled tenderly and kissed her. "Come to me tonight," he said
softly into her ear. "I will show you properly."

They didn't kiss often; mostly their contact was purely physical, so
the kiss this time was even more comforting. Yriadha closed her eyes
and nodded, satisfied that he would do what he could.
