Ilyssia

Ilyssia was tired, bone tired. Tossing the firestone bags was hard
work and despite the fact that she was strong and fit, her arms ached.
Even though her body was fatigued, her mind was restless and she
decided to put on a jacket an take a walk before lights out.

}:I will come with you:{ Gwynnyth insisted. }:I'm not ready to sleep.:{

**I'll welcome your company.**

The pair exited the barracks and made their way to the bowl. The rain
had stopped some candlemarks before and the night was clear enough to
see both Belior and Timor. Still it was quite cold, very nearly
freezing Ilyssia would guess and not many people were out and about.
Approaching a still, quiet figure, she recognized her friend, but
wondered if she should draw any nearer. G'wen looked contemplative,
and she wasn't sure if he'd want company.

}:Why would he not?:{ Gwynnyth queried.

G'wen looked up, just in time to catch Ilyssa's eye. The stars were
bright tonight and he was waiting for E'naer when he had gotten caught
up in watching them. "Lovely night tonight, eh?" he smiled at her.

"It is," Ilysia agreed coming to sit close to her friend, Gwynnyth
cuddling up close to her. "Cold, but clear now that the rain's gone.
You looked several hundred dragonlengths away just now."

"Oh, I'm okay, just tired of the winter, that's all." He smiled at
her. "How're you two doing?"

"Tired and sore," she replied with a grin. "Who would have thought
firestone sacks would be so heavy? I really should have gone straight
to bed, but my mind is restless."

G'wen flinched at the thought of firesacks. "The first time we ever
had to do those in formations I got thrown completely off Neath by
one. It's_still_embarrassing." He hide his eyes behind his hand for a
moment, giggling.

She chuckled in spite of herself at the picture that brought to mind.
"That will probably be me. We haven't yet done it on our dragons. I
don't know if I'm more worried about tossing or catching, though. It
would be mortifying to miss and clock one of the weyrlingstaff in the
head. There are a few girls from my barracks I wouldn't mind
_accidentall_ getting, though," Ilyssia added ruefully.

G'wen snorted. "Yes, please don't get E'naer in the head. He'd be no
fun in bed!"

Ilyssia laughed. "Are you trying to compose a funny Harper's ditty?
Careful please where you heave that sack, tossing reckless from
dragonback. Don't clout my mate in the head, Less he'll be no fun in
bed."

"And in the morning, I had to get up 'cause he was snoring." G'wen
giggled. "Or something like that."

Ilyssia laughed at their silliness. "Was that the most embarrassing
thing that happened during your weyrlinghood? I mean besides the
incident where E'naer threw one of his friends at you, you got drunk,
and your da nearly got in a fight with the man. That's got to rank up
there too."

G'wen's face fell. "It that_still_being talked about?!" He buried his
head in his hands.

"No, no, no," she shook her head emphatically. "_You_ told me about
that. The gossip mongers are currently gabbing about my alledged
pregnancy."

"Did I? My memory's worse than a dragons." G'wen snorted and looked
out at the night sky before something she said hit him. "What a
minute...did you say you're pregnant?"

Ilyssia threw back her head and laughed, rubbing a hand over
Gwynnyth's soft hide. "No, I said that's what the rumors are saying.
They aren't true of course, I've never done anything that would a make
that a possibility but that doesn't stop the tongue waggers."

"You don't have to give anyone around here much to talk about. One
tiny thing and they're off to the races." G'wen shook his head and
reached down to pat Gwynnyth's head. "She's lovely. It's funny how her
name and Neath's name are almost the same, eh?"

"I hadn't thought about it, but you're right they are close." She
looked fondly at her lifemate who was butting her head against G'wen's
hand seeking more attention.

}:I like him.:{ The young green told her rider.

"I find myself wondering as she grows, what she'll look like as an
adult. She's good sized for the greens of her clutch, but still a
fair bit smaller than the smallest blue. Not that it matters of
course, as you say she's lovely."

G'wen leaned down to cuddle against Gwynnyth's face for a moment. "I
think she'll lean towards being bigger than the norm, that's for sure.
Neath was as big as some of the bigger browns when she was born, so it
didn't take any leap of imagination to know she was going to be as big
as she is. And S'vin's blue--even at hatching--was the smallest dragon
in the entire clutch. And Kadeth is still just about the smallest
dragon in the entire Weyr."

"S'vin...he flies in the Queen's wing right?" She had in mind a tall,
brown haired young man that hadn't quite yet filled out to match his
height. "And Kadeth is training as a search dragon?" People in the
caravan traded information as much or more than commodities so Ilyssia
was good at picking up names and details quickly and always had her
eyes and ears open.

"You've not met S'vin yet?" G'wen took her by the hand and began
leading her towards the weyrlings barracks. "We'll have to fix that
right soon. But, in the meantime, it's getting late and you guys have
a long day before you tomorrow." Once a Weyrlingmaster's assistant,
always a Weyrlingmaster's assistant.
