Pharisol sat rocking a sleeping granddaughter while her husband and
daughter helped get things organized. Her eyes followed them both and
watched the Steward when he finally came back and visited the healers.
When her husband returned to sit with her she leaned into him for a
moment. "Tell me about the Steward."
"Well," Quellen eyed his wife as he considered her reason for asking.
"He was Steward at Sawtooth Seahold before he came here and his
family's minor inland Hold before that, Echo Ridge I think. Seems to
know what he's doing."
"But he has no wife? All those turns and no family?" Sophine shifted
in her lap and Pharisol began to rock again.
"No, I get the impression he's been focusing on his career, which has
served him well. He's secured a high ranking position for a man of his
turns." Quellen thought about how Eirock's hand lingered on Sophque's
back. Had he imagined an undercurrent of...what was it? Nothing
inappropriate really but...something. His daughter had been widowed
all these turns and the Steward would be an excellent match. Far
better than her first husband, though Inokin had been a good man and
adequate provider.
"Did you see the way Sophque smiled at him? I haven't seen her show
any interest in any man since Inokin passed away." It was no means
certain he was dead, yet it had been near on five turns since the
sailor's ship had gone missing with all hands. Above all other
concerns, Pharisol wanted to see her daughter happy and well cared
for. "Was it my imagination or did he look interested in her? I mean,
why did he come to check on us specifically."
"That is certainly a good question. I thought there might have been
something, I couldn't put my finger on it. A familiarity perhaps?"
The orchardist looked straight into his wife's eye, then at the very
dear granddaughter in her arms. It was not only his widowed daughter
whose future needed securing. "Do they know one another? It has been
turns. It's high time really for Sophque to be considering another
husband."
"And past time," Pharisol said in agreement. She'd brought it up many
times before but Sophque had always been able to wheedle her Da. Well
except when his mind was already made up, and it sounded as if now
he'd be willing to talk about another husband for their daughter.
Pharisol loved her little Sophine but one grandchild was not enough
and their daughter wasn't getting any younger. "He would be a very
good match if he is wanting a wife. Sophque is a good housekeeper. Her
little cot was always neat as a pin."
"She's many good skills," Quellen nodded. Hadn't she been supporting
herself as a seamstress? "And she's a good mother and young enough to
bring more children to a marriage." Sophque was his only daughter and
he had been loathe to push an unwanted marriage upon her these past
turns. He wasn't a young man anymore, though, and who was to say how
long she could support herself and little Sophine. "Do you think she
might be interested?"
She bumped her shoulder into her husbands. "Did you see the way shed
smiled at him? Thats the way a woman smiles when she's interested."
He smiled at his wife, "I'm not always so good at picking up on those
cues. A father does notice when a man's hand lingers on his daughter,
though. Even if that man did rescue her from danger. Why did he go to
her cot in particular, do you suppose?" He asked, echoing his wife's
question from earlier.
"I'm thinking that's a question you may want to ask," she smiled a
knowing smile. "Unless I miss my guess those two have met before and
he had some sort of reason for coming to find her. Which means he
noticed she wasn't in the shelter. Normally I'd invite the man to
dinner but somehow I don't think we hold enough weight to invite the
Steward."
"No," he agreed. "I can thank him again for his help and ask how he
happened to know Sophque was in need of it. In the meantime you might
talk to our daughter."
"That, my dear husband," she said raising a loving hand to his face.
"Is an excellent idea." Pharisol leaned toward him offering her lips
for a warm kiss. She had been very lucky in her parents choice of a
husband and often regretted that she was unable to give him more than
just the one child and a girl at that. But they both loved their
little Sophque and wanted to see her happy.
