Sophque had covered the lovely pastel lawn dress in a silk cover while
she carried it back to the Lady's chambers. The cover both protecting
the garment from smudging and cushioned it to minimize wrinkles. The
jagged tear in the lower hem had been repaired almost invisibly with
tiny stitches of fine thread. The fabric was light and well suited to
Sunstone's weather but on top of that the construction had been a
challenge which she loved.
She could hardly wait until the Lady discarded one of her dresses. So
she could make one for herself in the same style. She couldn't afford
the same fabric by any stretch but the style was just stunning on the
Lady. She felt her own clothing to be far out of place to be serving
the beautiful young Lady directly. Yet they were almost the same
height and size. She could hope even if it was unrealistic.
"Welcome," Xeladrie said, looking up with a smile as Sophque came in. She
eagerly set aside her embroidery. "How was your day?"
"Very good ma'am," she said and dropped a curtsy. "The cook is
preparing a special dessert for tonight. She hopes to tempt your
appetite. She said you haven't been eating enough ma'am." Sophque
crossed the room to Xeladrie's wardrobe to hang the dress back in it's
proper place.
"I didn't mean to disappoint her. I'll try to eat tonight," Xeladrie
promised, shifting on the chair. So far she didn't feel very
different, other than the disinterest in food.
"Oh no ma'am," Sophque smiled. "She just wants to be sure she makes
something you'll enjoy. They're concerned for you." She knew all the
household staff were very happy to be working for the new Lady.
She'd been one among several of Xelfin's daughters, often overlooked
in the fuss surrounding others. By chance at first, by design later
on. Having people who paid attention to her was a little bit novel. So
she smiled back at the other woman. "Maybe one of them will have some
good advice. I expected to feel more different than I do now, but
other than the appetite, it seems as though not much as changed"
"I didn't have any problems at all during my pregnancy," Sophque
smiled at the Lady. "I was lucky in that. But I did have to remember
to eat. The healers told me it was important for the baby." She
thought of her little girl and just smiled. "Sophine is four turns
now."
"Was the birthing easy too? I'm a little nervous," Xeladrie admitted.
She wasn't going to lie to the Lady or she'd bear the brunt of her
displeasure later. "It was hard," she said and smiled. "But when your
babe is in your arms finally, it's all worth it."
"I'm glad to hear that. I hope it'll make my husband and myself both happy."
"All the staff is saying they've never seen him happier," she smiled.
"Did you hear about the Headwoman's son?"
"Wasn't he transferred out?"
"Yes, well it seems he didn't make it to his destination," Sophque
shook her head. Her eyes were sad for Yriadha was her friend. "Yriadha
is beside herself with worry. I don't know what I'd do if my daughter
went missing like that." Noticing a small dip in Xeladrie's hem she
knelt down and pulled out a needle and thread to repair the few
stitches in her hem. "Your Lord husband has sent out a search team to
find him."
"I hope they succeed." She didn't know much about the man, but she
couldn't help but feel a pang for the Headwoman's distress.
"I'd hate to think the area's unsafe." She hadn't heard anything about
dangers before she was married off, but then, who told the women?
"Oh it's safe if you stay near the hold. But he was on his way to
someplace else when he disappeared," Sophque said with confidence. "I
think they're sending out search parties."
"I hope they find him. Poor Yriadha." Xeladrie shook her head. "Are
there bandits locally or was it more likely to be animals or an
accident?"
Sophque's face clouded monetarily as if with a painful memory. "No. No
bandit's," she said as she turned away. "Lord Morin made sure of that.
There are regular patrols." She spread a smile and turned back, the
mention of his name usually choked her up but she'd gotten it out.
"I'm sure it was something else. Perhaps he just fell from his runner
and they'll find him safely tucked away with nothing more than a
broken leg."
Well, at lest her father hadn't sent her off into an entirely unsafe
situation. "Hopefully it's that," she agreed quickly, not wanting to
bother the other woman.
"So I was thinking about the new fabric. It would make up into a
beautiful new dress for summer. Would you like me to bring in some
sketches?"
"I think that would be lovely," Xeladrie said. "I envy how easy this
all seems for you. Fabric work, I mean."
Sophque grinned but shook her head. "I promise it's just a lot of
practice. Like when you dance," she smiled. "You're so beautiful when
you dance. You have to have spent a lot of hours practicing."
Xeladrie considered the matter. "I get too impatient when I have to do
needlework," she admitted.
"I can understand that," Sophque smiled. "It took long hours alone at
night to finally make me want to at least have something to occupy my
mind." She nodded. "I just wish I could dance like you."
"I think you'd be pretty in a dress, dancing with a man who was good at
it. Maybe at the gather we might hold. Do you have something suitable?"
"You really think so ma'am?" Sophque's thoughts turned briefly to a
certain tall dark and handsome Steward but then reality set in and she
shook her head. "Nothing as beautiful as yours," she smiled softly.
She wasn't the least bit jealous of Xeladrie, the Lady was sweet and
nice and wonderful to work for.
"That'll have to be fixed before the gather. Is there any spare fabric
that you could use to make yourself something nice?"
She didn't know if the Lady realized that there was nothing that
wasn't counted in the Hold. Yriadha was very good at her job and had
an inventory of everything. She was very careful of the Hold's
resources. Nothing went to waste. "There's nothing more than scraps. I
was thinking of making a quilt with them though," she smiled.
"Oh, that's a shame," Xeladrie said, pondering what she could do. "It'd be
nice if you got to dress fine as well."
Sophque's eyes gleamed at the thought. "That would be something for
sure. Maybe someday," she smiled. Even now at Xeladrie suggestion she
could almost see in her mind's eye a dress she could make. If only she
had access to the kinds of materials she'd seen and worked with
through her career.
"We'll figure it out closer to a Gather," Xeladrie said.
"Yes, ma'am," Sophque smiled. "Would you like to try it on?"
