The tiny bronze curled in G'wen's lap gave him little comfort. Though he
was tired from yesterday's Fall, it was his mental state that was worse.
Poor Neath was deep in grief for the loss of her current mate, Jodeth.
Thankfully she was asleep. When G'wen peered out at her he could see she
was still more grey than her striking green/golden colour. He sighed
heavily as he waited for E'naer to come back with breakfast. There was a
rumble of thunder off in the distance.
E'naer pushed the door open with his foot, trying to not drop the tray. The
kitchen staff had gotten bit carried away when he had explained the
situation to them. "G'wen?" he called. "Are you able to lend me a hand?"
Feral chirped from his shoulder, eyeing the steaming sausages with a lust.
"Before she eats it all."
Dusk--not much tamer than his mother--smelled the hot meat and leapt off
G'wen's lap. He didn't bother with being polite but went straight in for
the sausages, landing heavily on E'naer's tray.
E'naer cursed them both /between/ when the sausages disappeared to their
jaws and rest was dropped to floor. Such an effort he had made to get the
sausages and scrabled eggs from the kitchen staff.
"That's what we get for having two flits in the weyr." G'wen gave E'naer a
wry grin before coming over, rag in hand, to begin cleaning up the mess his
flit had made. In all the commotion Neath, at least, hadn't stirred a bit.
"At least the pastries are still okay to eat."
"I think the toast is fine too, having been covered," E'naer said,
salvaging what he could and helping G'wen. "This was not how I thought it
would be," he sighed. He had been thinking a romantic breakfast to distract
his weyrmate, not a mess on the floor.
"Life rarely is, is it?" G'wen gave E'naer a sad smile before glancing over
his shoulder to his greyish lifemate.
E'naer noted the direction of his gaze. "How is she?" he asked with
compassion.
G'wen shrugged his shoulders and sighed. "Just...sad, terribly so. I feel
so strange about it as well. I mean, I always knew P'nal didn't like me
very much, but then the mating Flight..." He visibly paled.
"Yes, you didn't actually part as a best of friends," E'naer said. He
wrapped his arm around G'wen's shoulder.
"I know. I wanted to confront him about it, just to know if he had done
that deliberately or had he really been caught up in Flight lust. 'Cause
even now it feels more like rape than a Flight." G'wen sighed and ducked
his head into his partner's shoulder.
"What ever problems he had, they're gone now." E'naer said, remember his
own encounter with P'nal.
"Yeah, but I really wanted to know. Just for my own peace of mind."
"I didn't know him that well, but based on what I knew of him, I'll say he
didn't mean it. I think he just lost his control," E'naer said.
"Still." G'wen silenced his mind when he saw Neath shift in her sleep and
grumble. The last thing she needed to know was that he had hated that
mating Flight.
"You can go wondering and iffing about it for rest of your life or you can
leave it behind you. Water under the bridge," E'naer said firmly, using a
tone he normally used with his weyrlings.
G'wen gave him a sideways look and pinched his cheek. "So when did you get
to be so wise?" he teased.
"Too many Turns working with the Weyrlings. It's either that or go crazy,"
E'naer could do cheeky too.
"Or just grab one and make him your weyrmate." G'wen winked at E'naer and
flopped over on the bed.
"That works too," E'naer placed what was left of the breakfast on the table
and sat next to him.
Gwe'n lay back and motioned for E'naer to follow. With the stress of Neath
there was one thing he hadn't done in a while, but now he wanted to.
E'naer was more than happy to comply.
