M'galec caught up with the old bluerider at an uncharacteristic jog.
"Journeyman U'val!"
U'val glanced briefly over his shoulder, pausing only long enough to let M'galec fall into step with him. "Yes?"
The bronzerider fell into step, though it was a bit of a stretch with U'val longer legs. "I wanted to thank you, sir, for your help with Abrei and Lenala."
"I wasn't helping you," U'val replied tersely, staring straight ahead. "I'm doing my job, M'galec. And I'm going to go about it properly. Perhaps, in the future, you could learn from my example." "And just what do you mean by that?" M'galec did not like being talked to like an errant apprentice, no matter the man's age.
U'val stopped abruptly, spinning to face M'galec. "Did you never learn the most important rule _every_ healer should know?"
"I have learned a _lot_ of important rules every healer should know."
M'galec planted his fists on his hips. Just what was this man getting at? "Oh?" U'val quirked an eyebrow. "Then tell me everything you know about the importance of objectivity, M'galec. Considering your behavior over the last few days, it shouldn't take long." "Are you _suggesting_ now journeyman that I was wrong in thinking that a woman and a man who had just been through a sexual trauma should not be forced to speak publicly about it?"
"I'm _suggesting_ that a surgeon has no right to discuss my patient's mental health with the Weyrleader without bothering to so much as _talk_ to me first," U'val replied in a low voice. "You are her weyrmate, M'galec, and because of that, no one trusts your objectivity. Now I'm going to have to face a Weyrleader whose is already annoyed and try to undo all the damage you've done." "You said yourself U'val, any apprentice would know what an asinine plan that is! Where were _you_ in all this? Why did it take my intervention to bring this light?"
U'val kept a tight leash on his temper, resisting the urge to shake a little humility into M'galec. "I don't suppose it ever occurred to you to speak to me about it?" M'galec snorted. "Well, it certainly would have if I had known the Weyrleader was such an ignorant ass."
"That's not a judgment you get to make," U'val replied shortly. "I'm going to take care of the mess you've made, and if you care about Lenala at all, you're going to trot your arse right back to your office and stick to weyrlings and surgery from now on." The bronzerider's eyes flashed. "Do not dare treat me as an errant apprentice, journeyman. I am a healer too, and I seem to be the only one who is not afraid to stand up to the Weyrleaders when they are acting in a way detrimental to the health of their riders. I will not stand by will Abrei acts like a spoiled teenager and you cower and kiss the ass of the Weyrleader."
U'val couldn't stop the laugh that burst forth, a sound of mixed amusement and disbelief. Shaking his head, he turned on his heel and started back down the hallway. "You are the most arrogant little puppy I've ever come across, M'galec. I hope you treat Lenala better than you treat the rest of the people of this Weyr." M'galec shook his head sadly. "I treat as behavior warrants." Were there no _real_ healers in this Weyr?
