Description: Delynn meets some of the Lord Holder's children.
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 13, day 1 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Felyna
Delynn was amazed how the time had flown, but with the morning
orientation with Lady Felyna, and then getting acquainted with the
staff it was nearly time for the midday meal. She was supposed to
meet the Lord Holder's children and hurried upstairs to the handsome
apartments and nursery. Taking a breath and smoothing her gown, she
knocked crisply on the door.
Corowal himself came to open the door. He smiled at the woman, showing
her his full charm. "You must be Delynn," he remarked and gestured her
inside.
Just slightly taken aback by having the Lord Holder open the door,
Delynn quickly recovered. She inclined her head, curtsied, and
offered a brilliant smile in return, acknowledging his greeting,
"Lord Holder."
Having only seen Lord Corowal at a distance before, she hadn't really
known what to expect. His blood might have qualified him as Lord
Holder but it was easy to see that his charisma had made him
successful in the position. With an aquiline nose and strong jaw his
face was pleasant, but beyond that he radiated a certain strength and
energy that engendered confidence in his ability.
Upon entering as he'd bidden, she added. "It's a pleasure to meet you, sir."
"Likewise. Come to meet the gang," Corowal replied. "Come to greet the
new Headwoman, and try to act in somewhat orderly manner," he then
called to the group of children filling the room.
Erassa looked up from the table where she had been helping Corolia
with her homework. The girl often struggled with her harper lessons.
Ofewal was, as usual, reading, while Felcoron and Beleran were
building towers from blocks. Wallia had been brushing the hair of a
doll. It was one of those expensive ones, with porcelain face and hair
made of real hair.
Seeing the large family she'd always wanted was bittersweet for Delynn
but her soft smile was more than welcoming and reached her warm brown
eyes. "My what a handsome and lovely lot," she said. "Looks like a
group that might be able to truly appreciate fresh baked cookies."
"Cookies!" Felcoron cried and rushing up, sent the blocks flying.
"There goes the orderly," Corowal mock-sighed. "The hungry one is
Felcoron, that's Ofewal, Corolia, Wallia, Beleran, who is Wallia's
milk brother and of course Erassa, who is their foster mother,"
Corowal pointed and named each children in turn.
Erassa came over, but not before helping Wallia to find her stick she
used to detect obstacles on her path.
"I'm pleased to meet you, Delynn," she greeted.
"It's good to meet you as well, Erassa. This group must keep you on
your toes," she stated taking a small carrisak from her shoulder.
Noting their names as they were given, Delynn was surprised by the
youngest child's handicap though she masked it well. "Are they okay
for just a small snack?"
"They can be a handful but they are good children," Erassa replied.
"Yes, it's long enough for their next meal so it won't spoil their
appetite."
Removing the cookies, she held the first one out to the anxious boy of
six turns, "Felcoron," she repeated the names as she handed out the
cookies. "Beleran, Ofewal, Corolia, and" she knelt in front of the
young girl carrying the guide cane, gently touching her hand before
taking it in her own and placing the treat in it, "Wallia. It is very
nice to meet you all."
"Hi new woman," Wallia greeted with bright smile and cocked her head
so her ears were aimed at Delynn's direction.
"Headwoman," Corowal corrected gently. "Let her touch your face, so
she'll have a idea what you look like and if you talk to her, she will
remember you from the voice," he instructed.
"Hi Wallia, my name is Delynn," the Headwoman said, taking the guide
stick and bringing the tiny hand to her face so the little girl would
not have to give up her cookie. "That was a lovely doll you were
playing with, her hair looked very soft. What is her name?"
"Dollie, except Corolia calls her Jessie," Wallia replied, her fingers
running across her face with feather-light touch.
"Her name is Jessie, you moron!" Corolia cried.
"Don't call your sister that," Erassa snapped with a sharp tone.
Corowal had already sent an order for second doll, for Wallia's
birthday which was soon enough, just before Turn's End. Then they
wouldn't have to fight over the one. Oh, there were other dolls, rag
dolls, but they weren't just as interesting.
"Well, many people go by multiple names," Delynn observed. "Some more
favored than others. Though I utterly despised it, my older cousin
used to always call be Del while my mother called me Lynnie. If a
person can have nicknames, I don't know why a doll can't." The gentle
touches on her face were so precious, they nearly brought tears to
Delynn's eyes and she wondered if the girl had been born blind. As
the girl finished, Delynn, placed her guide cane back into her hand.
"Which lessons do the Harpers have you working on Corolia?" the
Headwoman asked to change the topic.
"Math, I hate math. Why do I have to know how to count? I'm a Lady of
Blood," Corolia replied with sour voice and tossed her head.
"Why don't you ask Felyna what she's uses math for?" Corowal suggested
with a cocked eyebrow.
"Indeed, I met with Lady Felyna this morning and she has very
important Hold records with impeccable calculations. Besides, how will
you keep track of your dance partners and how many times you've danced
with each if you don't learn your arithmetic?" Delynn added giving the
girl a wink before turning to Ofewal. "And what were you reading, sir?
Anything you would recommend?"
"I'm reading harper histories, about Ancients and Ninth Pass," Ofewal
said after glance at his books cover. He was pleasantly surprised,
most people weren't interested in his readings.
"The ninth pass was an interesting time in history, and the knowledge
gleaned was precious," she stated with a knowing nod. She enjoyed
reading, though she seldom found much time for it. "I'm very pleased
to live in a Hold where we have the hydro power to allow us the luxury
of electricity."
"So much happened back then, and so much has been lost since then,"
Ofewal said with a passion of intellectual mind.
"Well, we just need enterprising young men like yourself to help us
rediscover the good that was lost," she said with a smile. The Lord
Holder's children were delightful, though she was sure they could get
up to plenty of mischief when they had a mind to.
"I like you," Ofewal said with a smile that resembled his father's.
Otherwise he was the image of his late mother.
"You'll do wonderfully," Corowal murmured approvingly to Delynn.
Anybody who could win over his children was going to work out just
fine.
