Corofel

Corofel

"Ro! Ro!" Corofel basically just flew to hug his friend. He had managed to
get permission to attend the Hatching. Witnessing the Impression, he was
both proud of his friend and quite envious. "I saw it all! Congratulations!
What's his name? What are you doing now? I'm so jello! And I miss you and
it's boring in Ambers without you." The words just rushed out of his mouth.
Finally he had to stop to breathe. It was the first Hatching Corofel had
seen and it had filled him with excitement.

Just hearing his voice-the one of the first friend he had ever really
made-put R'gelen at ease. The weyrling didn't say anything for a moment.
Then he rushed forward and joined in the hug, not letting go for sometime.
"Missed you too. Everything is upside down here. I guess it's going to be
home though so I have to get used to it. Tell Symion for me?" He looked
hopeful then remembered the other question. "Iroth. I get to stay at the
Feast for a little while-say hi to people and eat and stuff. Then I have to
go to bed because tomorrow is going to be very hard apparently."

"Like iron?" Corofel grinned impishly. "Yeah, I tell Symion," he promised
more seriously.

"I really wish you could be here. It's not as much fun alone. I mean..I
don't know any of these Weyr people." That was true enough. He hadn't really
gotten to know many of the other candidates since he had been too focused on
his studies. He knew Corofel had duties though. And someday, he'd have a
grand time being Lord Holder.

"I wish I was here too, the Weyr seems like a fun place. Hey, you know what!
When we are both grown big and you're Weyrleader and I'm the Lord Holder, we
can meet and get drunk and take over whole Pern!" Corofel said and got
carried away with enthusiasm.

"I bet your brother will be Weyrleader before I ever am, if I ever am. Your
father seems to have strong Blood." R'gelen shook his head, laughing. "Maybe
if any of your younger brothers get going, he can get a Hallmaster out of
it." This was great. This was what he'd been missing. "Did you get any of
the food? They have _everything_!"

"I know Ofewal wants to become a harper," Corofel grinned. "And if Symion
gets to be a Vintner Hallmaster," he laughed. "Oh, yes, the food. Almost as
good as Zelanka's."

"I don't think Symion will ever be Hallmaster. I think once he gets
journeyman he's going to travel all over. He wants to see the world and all
that." Something about his friend told R'gelen that if he was ever in charge
things could go wrong. Maybe how long it had taken for him to get promoted
was part of that. "So who's here with you?"

"Lord Nimroy," Corofel replied with a shrug. "He's supposed to watch after
me while the others do the official stuff."

"Oh well that's good. There's lots of people. They said I should dance but I
don't dance." He just felt weird talking about it really. At his present
turns he wasn't really into girls either yet. R'gelen was more worried about
what was going to happen in the morning. "When I start going between I can
come visit."

"Well, you can dance but you don't have to. Wanna sneak off? You could show
me your dragon?" Corofel suggested. "And visit would be a great."

"Where would we sneak to? Not the barracks. Might be other people in there
and I can't have the Weyrlingmaster mad on my first day. Somewheres else?"
That idea he was okay with. He liked exploring the Weyr. Problem was, he
might not be able to find their way back.

"There has to be lot of interesting places in the Weyr," Corofel said.

"Like what? It's mainly like the Hold. Crafters, staff, dining cavern,
weyrs, infirmary, barracks, and offices." R'gelen didn't think there were
too many interesting places. Except for maybe one that he just now starting
to wonder about. "There...well...the bathing chambers..."

"Ooh, I heard they let both genders bathe at the same time," Corofel was bit
older than his friend and he certainly wouldn't mind a glimpse of naked
women.

"They do. Some people don't do it but most have to just make do because they
only have so many. It's not like the Hold where they are separated by gender
or people bathe in their own heated water." That's what they had done at the
cothold. He'd had to lug buckets from the river. Walking down the tunnels,
R'gelen led the way to the closest one. "Course everyone's probably at the
feast now so there might not be anyone anyway."

"Yes, that's possible," Corofel said, his head kept turning this way and
that way, when he tried to see everything there was to see of the Weyr. He
didn't get chances like this one very often.

It didn't take long to reach the bathing chamber. As R'gelen suspected, it
was actually empty. Everyone was at the feast, dancing and eating. He
shrugged, but let Corofel look anyway. "How's your Dad and everything?"

"Dad's fine, busy and rather pissed off with something Dolphin Cove did,"
Corofel replied absentmindedly and let his gaze roam the big cavern. No
naked women, which was disappointing. It was larger than he expected.

"Oh?" As a new rider, he was interested in that. After all, hold and Weyr
relations was important, wasn't it? "What did they do that could be that
bad? Let an orchard be thread-eaten or something?" He let him look for a
little bit longer then led him away back through the tunnels. They probably
shouldn't be gone long. He needed to go to the barracks soon anyway.

"No, there was fight between guard and a dragonrider. Dad felt that Weyr
handled it badly," Corofel only knew what his father had written in a letter
or he had heard people gossip.

"Wow. A fight between a guard and a dragonrider? I didn't think...riders
were allowed to fight. Because of the danger to their dragons. That doesn't
sound very good at all." R'gelen was glad he wasn't at Dolphin Cove then if
Lord Corowal was mad at them. He knew what Corofel was like when he was mad
and a larger version of that probably wasn't any good.

"He doesn't write me about everything, but yeah, it's not good thing,"
Corofel agreed.

In a few moments, they made it back to the feast. R'gelen stopped to look
around. He didn't want to leave Corofel. He was going to miss him. He didn't
have any friends here. **Well I have Iroth but that's different.** He looked
over at his friend and sighed. Maybe he could manage one more candlemark.
"Come on, let's eat some dessert. I'm sure you're probably hungry anyway
right?" He had caught a few morsels before everyone had started to find him.

"I'm always hungry," Corofel replied with a grin. He was fourteen after all.
