The shuffle of feet made Saibra look up, and immediately she wished
she hadn't as it was to an eyeful of K'yne, looking tall and
devastatingly handsome, as usual. Saibra was bent over a map spread
about on her desk. Memorizing the major Holdings beneath their care
and the names of the Ladies and Lords that lived there was still
something that she was working on. While some Weyrwomen delegated Hold
relations to a 'second or to another goldrider, Saibra enjoyed getting
to know the individuals that supplied the Weyr with food and
provisions.
"Kaibren's with his foster mother." She said in a dismissive tone as
she turned her eyes back to the map.
"I'm not here for Kaibren." There was something laced within K'yne's
tone that made the Weyrwoman look up, her blue eyes narrowing as she
regarded his impassive face.
"Then what can I help you with, brownrider?" Saibra arched an eyebrow,
refusing to let K'yne turn this in to something personal.
Crossing his arms over his chest, K'yne leaned against the doorway to
her office, effectively blocking the only way out aside from
Chioneth's ledge. What was it about him that was so intimidating?
Saibra wondered as she silently regarded him.
"A Candidate, Weyrwoman?" His vow was low and deadly.
"Excuse me?" She asked with genuine confusion.
"You're spreading your legs for Candidates now too?"
The words stunned Saibra for a moment, and then when she recovered it
was with an explosive flash of anger. Stepping forward the Weyrwoman's
hand whistled through the hair as it clipped the side of K'yne's face
in a sharp slap.
"I don't know who you think you are but you'll watch your tongue when
you're talking to me!"
K'yne did not appeared rattled by the slap, after all, it wasn't the
first, nor probably would be the last, that he'd been on the
receiving end of Saibra's anger.
"It's true then."
Saibra wanted to wipe that stoic look off of K'yne's
face.**Infuriating son-of-a...**
"I have no idea what you are talking about!"
It was K'yne's turn to arch a dark, golden eyebrow, "You didn't whisk
a Candidate away from his duties for some fun in the sun then?"
K'yne's words made realization dawn on Saibra, and she took a step
back, "You're talking about _Aluka_?" She thought of the day she'd
taken the redheaded Candidate to her favorite sandy location. There'd
been some flirting and he'd rubbed lotion on her but nothing serious
beyond that had happened. She hadn't thought of the Candidate or that
day since.
"Is that his name, then?" K'yne hissed softly, as if this proved her guilt.
Saibra's lips pressed into a thin line, annoyed with herself for
giving K'yne more ammunition, "What I do in my personal time is none
of your business!"
"But don't you think the Weyrleader would like to know that his
Weyrwoman is running around with Candidates? Imagine what the Holders
would think if they knew they were sending their little boys off to
the Weyr to become men under the tuteledge of the Weyrwoman." K'yne's
voice was cold and cut to the quick.
"I don't think G'nir cares what his Weyrwoman is doing, as long as
she's not running off North again and leaving him in a lurch. And as
for the Candidates, and Holder relations, you can mind your own
business! I'm not guilty of what you so obviously believe about me,"
**Okay, there was J'ackt...** "and I will not try to convince you
otherwise since you are so ready to think the worst."
K'yne blinked at Saibra, letting a silence fall between them that left
the Weyrwoman feeling anxious for what he would say next, "You should
be careful, Weyrwoman. Your reputation will begin to catch up with
you, and once it is ruined you've lost any chance of recovering it."
With clenched teeth Saibra placed both hands on K'yne's chest and
shoved him backwards, outside of her office doorway, "Get out of my
office! The next time you come and speak to me in such a manner I will
have you grounded for insubordination." Chioneth growled threateningly
to put some fire and authority behind Saibra's words.
Arinoth winced at the anger emanating from the Senior Queen. }:Rider!
Get out of there, would you? You're going to get us in trouble!:{
K'yne turned to leave, but stopped when Saibra flung the final barb at
his back, "And don't you ever come near Kaibren again!"
The wooden portal slammed shut, sounding, and feeling, like the final
nail in the coffin that had once been a friendship.
