Hatching Feast Ruminations

Writers: Chelle, Leigh M-F.
Date Posted: 28th May 2015

Characters: R'gelen, A'kua
Description: A slightly kinder encounter.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 12, day 7 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Nokala.

The second trip through the serving line was just as good as the first. The
succulent smells of the hatching feast made Aluka salivate once more. Now
he just needed to find a place to sit again. He got lucky earlier before he
started performing with Nokala and the others, but now there were more
people, so it might be he would have to pick a random corner and sit on the
floor to eat. He turned and stepped away from the line after getting a
second dessert, and then suddenly had to swing his tray to the side when he
nearly clobbered someone with it. "Whoa, sorry!"

The brand new weyrling had been paying more attention to other things at
the time, like stuffing his pockets out of old habit. Chances were, the
weyrlingmaster was going to find food hidden all over his cot for most of
his career. **Might get hungry for a snack later and then what would I
do?** was his reasoning in the matter. "Oh umm...yeah...careful." He didn't
get riled since there wasn't any reason for that.

The Candidate recognized the voice. "Oh, it's ya," he said with surprise.
He hadn't thought he would run into his now former roommate so soon.
"Congratulations on the bronze." Even as he said it, he remembered a
previous conversation with R'gelen and winced internally. Oh, this kid was
going to put himself under incredible pressure. Poor weyrling.

"Hmm thanks." And then he realized something. He had Impressed. This boy
had not. He didn't look too disappointed though, which was a good thing.
That was curious. "You look well." He himself was wearing a tunic and
trousers which were comfortable.

"Of course I'm well. I'm out there playin' music," Aluka said with a smile.
(And he wasn't under any personal pressure at the moment. That was a plus.)
He started scanning the area for seats. "Don' suppose ya see anywhere to
sit?" It was true Aluka was taller, but maybe from his point of view,
R'gelen could see something he couldn't.

"Congrats then since I suppose that means you're pretty good." He himself
knew zero about music beyond the Teaching Songs and Duty Ballads. "No...but
watch this..." With his new bronze weyrling knots, he managed to get them
two empty seats when he approached a table. This was his Hatching, after
all. And since there were so few bronzes Impressed, people remembered.
Plus, his red curls were a giveaway.

"Oh, so that's what those knots're good for," Aluka muttered half to
himself as he followed R'gelen. But he did nod to the weyrling as they sat.
"Thanks," he said, setting his tray down and picking up knife and fork to
carve into the slices of roast wherry he had chosen.

"Welcome. And yeah I haven't figured out yet what else. Maybe not anything
till graduation which is a very long time from now for me." He was well
aware of his turns. He had accepted it though. It also meant he would have
more turns to be protected and learn about how to be a better rider. That
was probably a good thing since he didn't have the first clue. All he had
going for him at the moment was a sleeping dragon in his head and more food
than he knew what to do with.

"Well, that just means ya have more time to learn and figure out everythin'
out," Aluka reasoned. "That's not terrible. By the time ya graduate, you'll
be the most well-prepared weyrlin' the wings can get. Forewarned,
forearmed, all that."

"Maybe. There'll still be a lot of Pass left by the time I get to the Wings
though." R'gelen understood that fighting thread was what he was called to
do, but he had been raised to run inside from the silvery menace all of his
life. It was going to be a huge adjustment being in it.

"Aye, that's for sure," Aluka said, shrugging. "No rush there." He had some
more food in order to let R'gelen keep talking. It might be helpful somehow.

Shrugging, the young man went back to eating for a bit before he spoke
again. "No sense in worrying over it now though. I've got to survive the
next few months of weyrlinghood first."

"I bet you'll be fine," Aluka stated. (So long as he didn't obsess over
every single mistake and worry it might bring "shame" to the family, that
is.)
