His mind was made up as they finished their private dinner. "How are
you feeling," he asked as he pushed the last of his tuber around his
plate with a fork. Finally he set it down and picked up his wine.
"I'm fine today," Xeladrie answered.
"Glad to hear it," he said with a glint in his eye it would be hard
for her to miss. "I've been concerned knowing how difficult this
pregnancy has been for you." That was partly the truth. The rest of it
didn't really concern her but tonight he wished to spend in his wife's
bed.
She studied his face carefully. "It seems the beginning was the worst.
I've been assured it tends to get better the second trimester."
"Are you up to spending a bit of time with me tonight," he smiled.
She considered it for a moment, a little surprised he was seeking her
out now. Hadn't he just wanted an heir from her? But at the same time,
they'd been developing more of a rapport than she'd expected when
she'd been told about the wedding. It would make him happy. And he was
capable of making her feel good...
"I think I'd like that." She gave him an answering smile, one still shy.
"I'm very glad to hear that," he said warmly and reached for her hand.
"I know I'm not what you would have dreamed of," he added. What young
girl wanted a man twice her age for a husband. "Neither of us really
had a choice. But I have come to enjoy your company Xeladrie."
He was being surprisingly forthright with her, and she rewarded it in
kind. "At the time I didn't want to marry anyone. But you've been so kind
to me and I couldn't have asked for more than that."
Not for the first time Bryvin wondered if he could mold Xeladrie into
the wife any man would envy. Certainly she was lovely and she had
shown her intelligence in many ways. Even now she bowed to his desire,
and gracefully at that. Perhaps, in time, he could even trust her. He
lifted her hand and leaned forward to bring the palm to his lips.
"Perhaps," he said after a moment. "we can become friends."
Friends? With the man who her sister had loved? She bowed her head down so
her eyes met the table to conceal the small rebellious spark that had
flared in her. Let him think she was overwhelmed by his courtly gestures.
"Friends," she repeated softly.
"Come then," he said softly and lifted the napkin from his lap. Rising
he helped her do the same and led her toward her bedroom.

He hadn't stopped until he knew she'd reached her pleasure and then
taken his own. He fell to the side and pulled her to him. "So
beautiful," he said with a smile tilting her chin up and dropping a
kiss lightly on her lips.
Her thoughts were slightly muddled from the pleasure. "I understand
now why - so many enjoy this," she corrected herself. She'd been about
to think about her sister, but didn't want to do that here and now.
"It can continue for awhile, right?" she asked. Surely when she was
too round with their child, he wouldn't want her. But why not be
greedy now?
He smiled at that and his hand moved possessively to her abdomen. "I
wouldn't want to hurt the babe, so it can continue as long as the
healers say it's safe," he said. "I do enjoy you wife," he added.
"I'll be sure to check," she said. "I assume you're hoping for a son?"
"What man doesn't hope for a son or two," he smiled at her.
"We'll have to think of names at some point." She stretched out long and
slow, and then paused as something occurred to her.
"Yes we will," he agreed and reached to cup her breast as she
stretched. They'd grown a bit with her pregnancy in a very agreeable
way and he bent to run his tongue over her pert pink nipple.
"I was thinking - " But the sensation distracted her. She arched into
it responsively, but her mind was still occupied.
"You were thinking," he chuckled the question. "Then I wasn't doing it
right."
She probably should mollify him - and it was true, he was distracting
in a good way - but the thought just wouldn't leave her alone. "I
haven't seen Humari in a bit. It's not like her. Maybe something's
wrong with the babe."
"If you're worried, I'm sure I can check with Taril to make sure all
is well," he said absently. He leaned on an elbow while his other hand
continued to play. "Are you really worried?"
"She's not just a lady, she's becoming my friend. And I can't imagine
why she'd stay away this long. It would be a favor to me," she
pleaded. If he thought he could keep her happy with simple little
gestures...
"Of course I will find out for you," he said and made a mental note to
ask Taril what was going on. "But now," he said sliding down the bed
with a feral grin. "I think you need something else." He loved the way
he could control her body. She would beg him for her release this
time.
Her mission accomplished, she was happy to comply with his expectations.
"Yes," she said, arching into his touch.
