Description: E'naer checks in with one of the new weyrlings.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 13, day 1 of Turn 7
E'naer walked the center aisle of the weyrling barracks, checking how the
new riders were doing. "Titianth, please keep your tail out of the
corridor if you don't want it to get stepped on," he instructed a tiny
green who regarded him with swirling eyefacets. She did pull her tail out
of his way. "Thank you, dear," E'naer said and continued. "Good morning,
S'ris, feeling better today?" he asked from the young brownrider who had
been suffering from a cold.
"Yes, sir, a bit," the boy replied and blew his nose. "At least my throat's
not hurting anymore."
E'naer nodded. "Don't hesitate to check up with healers, if you don't start
getting better."
He stopped at the empty spot. "Where's L'nah?" he asked.
"Still feeding his dragon," someone knew.
"He's slow, " someone else snickered mocking tone. E'naer looked around him
with sharp look, trying to see who said that.
R'gelen, on the other hand, was in his own wallow. He couldn't go far
outside the barracks yet so his world had been very small. On the other
hand, he understood it was making him get to know his fellow weyrlings as
well as spend time just getting to know his dragon. And Iroth was very
different from him so in many ways, that was fascinating. Hearing the
Weyrlingmaster Third, he stepped up to the opening. And then he felt a
pressure as a small bronze dragonet stepped up beside him, curious to see
who it was.
Iroth was always watching and he naturally felt it necessary to be a part
of things. After all, everything _should_ include him. Seeing the
greenrider, he wondered if they were going to be learning anything
interesting today. He had already fed and had his bath. His hide was newly
oiled. The rest of the day was completely open for him.
Since E'naer couldn't find out who it was, he moved onwards. "R'gelen and
Iroth, good morning. How are you?" he greeted the bronze pair.
"Well enough sir. About to clean the wallow out.." No matter how many times
he swept, there seemed to always be mud or something else tracked in.
Dragon claws weren't the neatest things ever. He frowned and looked down at
his own feet as he thought about it.
Iroth gave a small rumble of greeting as he continued to watch the man
curiously. His eyes whirled a happy blue, but noted what his other
classmates were doing.
"Good to hear that." E'naer said. "Iroth looks well oiled," he
complimented. "As a bronze, he grows up fast, so it's very important to
make sure his hide doesn't get dry," he lectured. He was teacher first and
foremost.
"Oh umm...if I don't, he fusses." That caused a look from the dragonet
before the head swiveled back to face the weyrlingmaster. "I mean.....I
feel his itching. So it makes sense for me to take care of it before it
starts."
}:I do not fuss. I remind:{
**Those reminders are awful commanding.**
}:Naturally.:{
Iroth was missing the point and R'gelen didn't think he was going to
realize it in the end. As it was, he felt like rolling his eyes but he
didn't. Instead, he wondered if there were any questions he meant to ask
E'naer that he'd forgotten about. "Is it normal for young dragons to sleep
a lot?"
"Yes, like human children, they actually grow while they sleep. Not to
mention they need the rest because growing up also takes energy," E'naer
replied. "So, you're not imagining it, if you think he's half inch taller
after a nap," he said with laughter in his voice.
That caused the young boy to look over at the dragonet beside him. **Are
you that much bigger?** And then he shook his head and tried to think about
another question. "What are the next lessons going to be about?" It might
help if he was prepared after all.
"Right now, you'll be learning the basic care of a dragon and explore the
bond between you two," E'naer replied.
"Bond?" The basic care part, that was easy. R'gelen understood the washing,
oiling, and feeding. He had to do it enough times a day already that he was
sure he had it mastered.
"Yes, you share his feeling, he shares yours. You both need to learn to
separate them, shield your thoughts from the other when necessary. There's
also times you can use that bond to see what Iroth is seeing. Then there
the total merging during the Mating Flights," E'naer explained.
The idea of mating flights made R'gelen slightly nervous and he didn't want
to think about that just then. The rest of it was intriguing though. At the
moment, he didn't understand why he would want to turn it off. He liked
feeling what Iroth was feeling since it was so different from his own
feelings. He used to learn about his dragonet. And Iroth knew when he was
hungry, sleepy, or feeling sick. For the first time, he had someone who
worried over him and he liked it. He didn't like the idea of separating
them. "Why would I need to shield my thoughts?"
"You'll learn that during the class. And you probably have to grow few more
Turns before you truly understand it," E'naer said, remembering how very
young this bronzerider was.
Looking over at Iroth, who really didn't understand it either from the
confusion that was coming from him, R'gelen simply accepted it. "Yes sir."
"You're doing well," E'naer encouraged him. "Carry on," he said, moving to
forward to check the next weyrling-pair.
