Yriadha watched the door close behind her daughter, her face taut with
surprising concern. She had never missed a grandchild's birth, and
being prevented from witnessing the next deeply bothered her, no
matter what the circumstances might be. She turned to Bryvin, ready to
soothe his obvious temper and convince him to let the whole ugly
business be.
Bryvin didn't say anything but whirled and backhanded the Headwoman
across the face with enough force to send her to her knees.
She never expected the blow or the sudden flash of light and the
sensation of one side of her face exploding in utter pain. She found
herself sprawled on the ground, her hand flying up to cradle her face
even as the taste of blood filled her mouth. She was shocked as
realization came of what had happened. He had hit her. He had _hit_
her! She had never been struck like that in her life; not even her
husband, useless drunk that he had been, had ever dared raise a hand
to her. This man who had soothed her, comforted her and bedded her so
well had struck her! She stared up at him, her hand against her mouth
as tears, unbidden and angry filled her eyes.
And she was angry. The anger filled her eyes before she remembered
whom she faced. There was no hiding it as she struggled to her feet,
ready to unleash a sharp tongue.
He saw the light in her eyes and knew it for what it was. This woman
had never been cowed in her life. While there were things he
appreciated about her, there was no mitigating his anger now and he
lifted a brow as he cuffed her again.
The pain flared again and she stumbled back, even more blood filling
her mouth. She felt her face swelling and a hint of fear fluttered in
her chest, but stubborn willfulness refused to let her back down. In
all of her years, no man had ever gotten the best of her. Ever! She
caught herself on his desk before she fell, even more tears leaking
down her face. She shook her head as a wave of dizziness caught her,
and her head pounded. **NO! Face him on your feet!** She struggled to
stand up straight and rose, chin lifting with pride.
He had yet to say a single word and down deep he admired the strong
will that continued to persevere in the face of the blows he'd given
her but she would break. There was no doubt in his mind that she would
fear him going forward. He would make certain. This time it was a
balled fist that took her in the midsection. He would never have done
it if she were still of child bearing age, but she wasn't and he was
angry.
Her breath exploded out of her at the blow and she tumbled down to
ground, arms curled protectively around her abdomen even as she gave
sobbing gasps to try to catch her breath. She hacked and coughed,
struggling to take in the air she needed. Her breath hitched now with
soft cries, no longer able to keep them in as the tears erupted in
sheets. She lifted her head, face swelling to look up at Bryvin,
trying to understand why he had attacked her. She wavered, trying to
get to her knees, but they were too shaky. "Why?" The word was harsh,
filled with fear, anger and humiliation.
"Because _I_ am Lord here woman. Your actions reflect on me." He paced
slowly back and forth near her just waiting for her to try and defy
him again.
She had never said he wasn't! She shuddered and groaned, her anger
spiking even with the pain in her face and abdomen. "I did what was
right...What _that man_ did.." She rose, swaying to face him on
unsteady feet. Her body hurt. Where his hands had landed on her, hurt.
Why? She had served him well...in many respects.
"You don't get it do you," he asked. His hand grabbed her neck and
chin. He pushed her roughly to the wall and pinned her there. "_You_
decided without consulting me at all. _You_ decided when _I_ am the
one to decide. You will learn to consult me Yriadha. Are we clear?"
That brought a startled shriek out of her and she grabbed at his hand,
trying to pull it away. Her weight was on her toes and her face was
pale even as she began to struggle. She nodded frantically as her
airway was closed off and without thought, brought her nails against
his skin and scratched in an effort to make him let go.
He turned and tossed her onto the rug. Some of her actions were
understandable but she was getting out of hand like her son had. He'd
paid his price but Bryvin still had use for his Headwoman. "Don't ever
do anything to separate Humari from Taril again. She belongs to him
not to you. Whatever their issues may be, they are no longer your
concern."
She fell to the ground with a thump and wheezing gasps of air. The
situation, the stunning blows and what she felt was sharp betrayal
overwhelmed her. He was supposed to have been on her side! As she lay
sprawled on the floor, weeping out of fright and anger, she couldn't
help but feel as though it wasn't really happening to her. "She's my
daughter. He's turned her from me!" Her words were soaked with tears.
"He hurt my son!" She wept, a coppery, but salty taste filling her
mouth as tears mingled with the blood on her lips. "I know he did!"
"Typical woman. You know nothing of the sort," he spat. "You _think_
he did. But that is just your opinion, not a fact. When we find
Yarmel's body we'll know if there was foul play. If it can be proved,
then Taril will pay. But _you_ are not his judge."
In his opinion Yriadha had turned Humari away herself. She really had
no one else to blame except maybe Yarmel. He bent and grabbed her hair
to pull her face close. "If you had asked I might have given you
permission. But you didn't ask and _that_ is why you're being
punished."
She cried out as he grabbed her hair, her head tilted at an awkward
level. Even through her tears and her anger, she knew she was treading
dangerous ground, but she had never believed he would ever really
harm her. "I'm more than he is!" She protested softly, trying to pull
away from the harsh grip, even as she realized that what he was saying
might have been true. "It didn't concern you, Bryvin...I didn't think
you needed to know." She met his gaze, and her hand fell on his as she
tried to work his fingers loose. "Let me go..."
He grabbed her hand and pulled her to her feet by her hair. "You are
what I say you are," he growled. He could hear movement outside his
office and knew this event would not go unnoticed. "You will obey me."
He was finding her resistance rather stimulating.
The pain and the humiliation was too much. Yriadha shrieked from the
yanking on her sensitive scalp and swung wildly, desperate to escape
and just get away from his grip. She was afraid of him now, but was
also angry that she feared him. So she fought, one hand gripping at
her hair to diffuse the pull and the other waving wildly at him,
striking his chest in glancing blows.
The corner of his mouth lifted at her wild swings until she connected
with his jaw. He dropped her on her feet and stepped back with
narrowed eyes. Another backhand and she was on the floor again. This
time she didn't move.
