Yriadha woke slowly, her eyes fluttering even as her head pounded its
complaint. Her first thought was that she hurt all over and she wasn't
certain why. She was laying on something soft, her pillow, but her
head felt like it had been cracked by repeated blows with a hammer.
She groaned, lifting a hand to her eyes and flinched as another throb
of pain emerged from her light touch. Why... Her eyes opened blearily,
but it was hard to see. It was dark. Memories flooded in. Had it been
a bad dream?
"Finally awake," he said and set his wineglass down on the table next
to the bed.
She jerked, knowing the voice and the memories flooded in. He had
struck her repeatedly; that was why her head hurt. She had fought back
and then a flash of astounding pain and bright light across her eyes.
Her face seemed like it was nothing but a large bruise and it was no
wonder she was having trouble seeing, even if it was dark. her eyes
were swollen. She immediately shoved herself back and away from
Bryvin's voice, only to have her back come up against the head of the
bed.
Fear surged, followed by the familiar taste of anger. She said
nothing, but kept back warily, fists knotted in the soft sheets.
He reached out and turned a glow. "Anything you want to say?"
As the room lit up, she looked around with quick glances and paled.
They were in his private rooms, the one she had prepared for Danrina.
It was secluded and quiet. No one would hear them. She turned her gaze
back to him, the pain in her body throbbing. Hands fisted in the
sheets and she said nothing.
"You are a good Headwoman, Yriadha," he said and took another drink of
his wine. "But your plans were short sighted and immature. You didn't
follow the law and so it came to a very sticky end."
Her eyes narrowed at the insult, even though the swelling around them.
"Like you follow the law?" She challenged.
His lips twisted. "I would have filed the documents with the steward,
and trust me I'd never do _anything_ I knew Morin wouldn't approve in
advance. Do you understand?"
Her lips thinned. "Yes." She kept away from him, eyes now never
leaving him. The beating angered her, that he had struck her down
repeatedly and it showed in her eyes. The anger also threatened a
possible retribution, her eyes glinting.
"Don't test me Yriadha. I've given you free reign but I can just as
easily take it all away again." He leaned forward. "Trust me, I'm more
devious than you could ever be and I'll find out anything you plan
before you can execute it. You won't like your punishment any more
than you did this."
She refused to back up any farther, her pride struggling to reassert
itself after being bent so far. "You had no right to strike me. If you
raise your hand to me again, you'll lose it." The words were heated
and angry. "I'm no child."
He reached out and slapped her hard. "Really? Try again to get with
the way this is really going."
The blow nearly knocked her off the bed and she was only able to catch
herself from falling by a bare inch. The slap painful on already
bruised skin made her eyes fill with reflexive tears. She held her
cheek gingerly and caught her breath, panting hard. Her fists knotted
in the blanket as her eyes rose to the bedside table. It had
decorative crockery on it. Without pause she grabbed it and flung it
straight at Bryvin. She floundered off the bed while the crockery flew
and made for the door.
He deflected the crockery with his forearm and it fell to the ground
to shatter. His hand snaked out and grabbed her wrist before she could
get to the door. "Oh no you don't." He ground out. "There is no where
you can run that is out of my reach and it's time you learned that."
He tossed her back on the bed and planted his knee between her thighs.
He pinned both wrists and looked down into her face. "I will have your
obedience Yriadha and the longer you fight me the harder it will go
for you. Do you understand? I would think before I answer if I were
you."
As she was tossed on the bed, she gasped and when her hands were
pinned above her, she stared at him in shock. "I don't belong to you!
You can't do this!" Their position and his closeness made her realize
exactly how much danger she could very well be in. His knee pressed
against her intimately and he was far too close. Her eyes widened in
slowly dawning horror and fear. "Let me go." She began kicking her
legs up, feeling her skirts slide to rest on her upper thighs. She
bucked her body, trying to get free of him and tugged at her wrists
frantically. "Let me go, Bryvin! Right now! Let me go!"
His eyes narrowed at her continued struggles. Perhaps he _would_ have
to kill her after all. If she couldn't learn this simple lesson then
her usefulness might be at an end. "Very well," he said and let her
hands go. He removed his knee and stood next to the bed. "I have
business to take care of. You go to your room and we'll continue the
discussion tonight." He turned toward the door. "Clean that up," he
added and pointed to the broken shards.
Shaking, Yriadha rolled away from him, panting with trembling breaths.
She had thought...she had been sure he was about to...She shuddered
and closed her eyes tightly, hands lifting to cover her eyes and face.
She began emitting soft, hiccuping sobs, her hands shaking. Her knees
curled up to her chest, a clear gesture of self protection. She had
never been treated with such violence, such brutality. In an odd way,
in the back of her mind she remembered Humari's bruises and wondered
if she didn't truly deserve this treatment. She could not stop
sobbing, her entire body shaking with the force of her cries.
