Vestian

"You asked to see me, Hallmaster?" Eilomar asked, his large frame
pretty much filling the whole doorway. He wore his customary scowl. It
didn't matter if he was interrupted by Hallmaster or an apprentice, he
was always equally irritated.

Used to the scowl, Vestian waved the man in and gestured to the seat
across from him. "Have a seat, Eilomar. I have a few important matters
to discuss with you. It shouldn't take too terribly long."

"Good. What is it?" Eilomar asked and sat down, checking that the
chair was sturdy enough before lowering his mass on it.

Vestian's brow quirked up at the short answer and rose, pouring a
glass of wine and offering it to the Master before leaning his hip
against the desk. "I've been approached by the Weyr for a few song
commissions. I'm sure that you've heard of the songs about the
incident with the weyrling and the guard that have been going about?
The Weyrleaders would like to counter it." He handed Eilomar his notes
from his meeting with N'vanik. "Azyn suggested a small competition
between the more talented composers and lyricists for the chance to
publish the commission.

"I'm not a composer. I just sing what other people write," Eilomar
pointed out hastily. "I lead the choir and teach the apprentices to
sing."

"I realize that, Eilomar. You excel with your choir. But you are aware
of our composers and who the better singers in our Hall are. I would
appreciate your input."

"Oh, I do know the composers rather well," Eilomar said, puffing out
his chest. "Endras is not what you're looking for. While he's great
composer, his style is more grandiose than what you are looking for.
He symphonies, that require full choir and orchestra. Not something
you can sing in tavern. I presume that's what you're looking for?
Something that will circulate easily among the holders."

A little flattery always worked so very well. Vestian hid his smile.
"Indeed. You hit the nail on the head exactly. We need someone a
little more common, less grandiose. Someone who can feel the pulse of
the people so to speak."

"Well, there's Lassom, he makes catchy songs. And Edras' little girl,
Enilda. She used to pen these funny little songs. I haven't seen her
in choir for awhile. Did she walk the tables and get assignment?"
Eilomar replied, showing how little attention he paid to the things
happening around him. Besides the members of his choir was always in
flux. Apprentices got promoted and assigned to elswhere, while new
ones came in. Journeyman came and went as their assignments allowed.
Anybody who could sing well enough was welcome to take part of the
choir. Half of the time Eilomar didn't even know the names of the most
choir members.

"Enilda walked the tables two Turns ago, yes." He kept his smile
private. The man truly was absorbed in his own little world. "Lassom
is still here. Thank you for pointing him out. I hadn't thought of
him."

"It's a pleasure to be of assitance," Eilomar said pompously
.
"Of course." Vestian eyed Eilomar. "Would you mind speaking to Lassom
or sending him here when you leave?"

"I can send him over to you," Eilomar replied.

"Please do." Vestian nodded in thanks.
