G'nir

G'nir

G'nir caught up with the boy just before he left the dining cavern. He was
not the correct person to deal with this, but since he had been there, he
had been the person to receive the Staff's complaints. So it was left to
him to deal with and not to Saibra or Headwoman or Weyrlingmaster's Staff.

"R'gelen, a moment, please," he called at the boy. "Are you aware that
dragons are not allowed in dining cavern? Or anywhere else in lower caverns
where non-riders live and work? Including the bathing caverns," G'nir said.
Sometimes diplomacy was needed, sometimes direct scolding. This was later
cases.

Turning around and seeing the Weyrleader and realizing he was calling his
name, R'gelen knew he couldn't run away. You didn't run away from the most
powerful bronzerider in the Weyr. Beside him, Iroth turned and lent an
imposing figure next to the small boy. He felt the fear coming from his
rider and the shame and he didn't understand it. He didn't like it. And if
it weren't for the fact that he knew this man could make trouble for the
both of them, he might have acted. As it was, he moved to stand directly
behind his rider, his eyes whirling a concerned yellow. He bent down so
that his head rested almost directly on top of R'gelen's.

"The Weyrlingmasters told us to explore the Weyr. I....was hungry so I
went to eat and Iroth had followed me everywhere else so he followed me
there." His voice didn't break but it was perilously close to it. He had
only been a weyrling for a little over a month and he had already caught
G'nir's attention. Despite his best attempts to hide it, his misery could
be seen on his face at being in this position. He felt small and stupid.
The other weyrlings hadn't made the same mistake. **Some bronzerider I
am.** "Sorry, sir."

For his part, Iroth was quite confused. His mind didn't understand why his
rider was feeling embarrassment. The bronze didn't have feelings of not
belonging since this was his Weyr so he didn't see why R'gelen didn't feel
like a part of this place and why he didn't like it. His rider wanted to go
home but to him, this was home. Why would they go anywhere else? He felt
pride in his rider so why didn't R'gelen feel the same way?

"Just don't do it again. You're getting away with it now, because you're
both so young and he's not stepped on anybody, yet. But he's getting bigger
everyday and soon he won't fit in the corridors. When you were told to
explore, I suspect they didn't think _this_", he swept his arm to include
the dining cavern. "There's still whole lot of Weyr for you to explore. The
feeding pens, beasthold, although the beastcrafters don't like if he spooks
the lifestock, both bathing lakes, the Weyr plateau, even the Hatching Sand
when there's no eggs in there. You can explore the countryside outside the
Weyr as long as you don't go too far."

If it was up to him, they were going to stay near the barracks for awhile.
R'gelen just knew he would do something else and they would get in trouble
otherwise, even if he didn't mean to. Sighing, he just nodded, thinking
G'nir didn't expect another response-just submission. **Come on, let's go
take a nap before evening inspection.** Then a thought crossed his mind and
the question crossed his lips before he had time to think about it. "Did
you get into a lot of trouble when you were a weyrling?" G'nir had been a
holder after all.

"Oh, yes, quite a bit," G'nir replied. "I was an arrogant, stubborn young
lordling who thought certain tasks were beneath him. Had to learn the hard
way that in Weyr, the rules and chores apply to _everyone_. " His smile had
a bit of nostalgia and whole lot of self-irony in it.

That gave R'gelen a little bit of hope. After all, if G'nir had made
mistakes and learned from it, maybe he could too. The man had obviously
figured it out since he was Weyrleader. "I think...maybe I'm a bit hard on
myself sometimes. But I just feel so stupid. Like everyone is so far ahead
of me." He gave a small frustrated sigh before looking up at his dragon who
was looking fondly down at him with love. "Even Iroth. I mean right now
he's a baby but he's going to be a grown dragon before I'm even a man."

G'nir couldn't blame the boy being hard on himself since he was himself
same. "Now, don't confuse ignorance and stupid. They are two different
things. Don't hesitate to ask, even if your question feels silly. Ignorance
we can cure, stupidity is something you're born with and you wouldn't be
bronzerider if you were stupid. Give yourself time to learn. As for your
age, it can't be helped by anything but time. It does mean you have more
time to learn than your average weyrling. Take advantage of it. You'll be
more ready when you reach the age to graduate to fighting wings."

That's what everyone had said. Taking a breath, the small boy decided he
would just accept it and try to take the advice given. "Maybe in a turn,
I'll feel more confident when I have more time and lessons under my belt."
His tone was hopeful. He had gotten used to the Hall after being there for
some time, so why not here?

"Exactly," G'nir said encouragingly. "You're in age where you grow up
fast and your life has gone through a major upheaval. It's hardly surprise
you're feeling insecure and lack of confidence."

Somewhere he had gotten the idea that as a bronzerider he should have been
sure of everything. Maybe, though, it was better not to be. That way, he
could learn. Feeling a little better about the situation, R'gelen put his
hand on Iroth's side. "Thanks, Weyrleader. I think we'll head on back to
the barracks now. And I promise he won't step on anyone." Iroth made a
small snort but he looked back at G'nir with whirling blue eyes, happier
now. }:Nirreth, your rider is a good leader. He speaks wise words:{

}: Of course he is, he's my rider,:{ Nirreth replied for the young bronze.

"You're welcome. Off you go then, I don't want you to miss your lessons,"
G'nir replied.
