The Guest Dinner was finally done and the place was clearing as Bryvin
turned toward one of his Holders. "Galrad," he said with a smile.
"Walk with me."
He turned and carried his wine toward the side of the hall where tall
doors fed onto a lovely terrace that overlooked where the festivities
would be held the following day. Several of the important guests
watched as they walked away but they didn't concern him at the moment.
Much of the evening Danrina had appeared quite uncomfortable with the
man and if it could have, Bryvin's heart would have ached for her. It
was quite obvious to him she didn't want to be marrying the taciturn
Holder but there really was no choice. Or maybe just the glimmer of
one if he could work it right.
Galrad inclined his head and followed the Lord Holder, his own wine
glass cupped in his hand. "Yes, my Lord?"
"My Lady wife has need of your fiance Galrad," he began. "As you know,
she's expecting my heir right now so it is a delicate time." He said
that in a manner to engage the Holders appreciation of how difficult
women could be when they were expecting. Men put up with it of
course, for the reward of a son to carry on their line.
Galrad was torn between pleasure that his fiancé was so well connected
and displeasure that his future wife was seemingly called for. "I can
see how the situation would be difficult for you and your Lady, my
Lord. But the contract is signed." He took a sip of wine. "Perhaps we
can come to an agreement that suits both of our needs."
"Agreed," Bryvin nodded pleasantly. "As you probably know Vestelem's
Hold, Golden Dreams, is in Turquoise Bay territory and so Danrina and
Xeledrie know each other fairly well when they were growing up." He
knew he was making some of this up but it was enough true to hold some
confidence he'd be believed. He put a hand on Galrad's shoulder. "You
know how young women are..." he shook his head. "I'm inclined to
indulge her as I'm sure you will be when Danrina carries your heir.
You will be most welcome here any time you wish to visit." He knew
Galrad's steward was quite good and able to care for the hold when his
Holder was away for a week or two.
Galrad's face showed a bit of his displeasure at having to visit his
own wife, despite the aid she would give the Lady Holder. Considering
the options, Galrad latched on to something that none of the minor
holders had, a potential close relationship with Lord Bryvin. "Perhaps
we can do this with the understanding that I will be with my wife two
weeks out of the month. I need an heir and to do so, I'll need regular
contact with Danrina. I will have to insist however that when she gets
with child, she will have to return home for the birth. I have no
liking for hormonal women, but I will have to insist that my child be
reared and birthed at my home."
"Of course," Bryvin said though he didn't mean a word of it. If he had
his way Danrina would stay with them as long as she held his interest.
He intended to have his way.
"At least you won't have to entertain a young wife," he smiled
knowingly. Young men with young wives were much more ready to
entertain them. Older men had more important work.
"True enough. I'd not have one at all, if not the need for an heir.
Most wives, I've found, are troublesome creatures." Galrad admitted
roughly. "But I do need an heir and another child as a secondary
possibility." He mused. "I suppose you'd want me to send funds for her
care."
Bryvin chuckled in agreement. "And you can visit her as long, or as
short, as you wish to make that happen. I'll have the headwoman make
sure she is eating the proper diet to make her fertile for your
visits." When it came to the funds Galrad offered he waved a hand.
"Not at all, you're doing me a favor by letting her stay with
Xeladrie. That will keep them _both_ out of our hair." Bryvin looked
at the mans glass. "Looks like we need to top that off," he said. "You
have a wonderful day tomorrow," Bryvin winked.
"I appreciate it, Lord Bryvin." Galrad inclined his head and looked
down at his glass. "Perhaps I will."
