She stood in the very spacious rooms, spinning around, taking it all
in. Her rooms since arriving at Sunstone had always been nice, but
_these_ rooms were amazing. She felt like the Lady Holder herself,
there was so much space.
"All for me?" she whispered to herself. She wasn't sure why she had
been given this honor, but she wasn't about to say no. She only wished
it would be for longer, but her impending wedding to Galrad hung over
her like a dark cloud.
"I think that's all miss," the drudge said as he placed the large
trunk at the foot of the bed. "I'll have someone come to clean that
up." he said nodding toward a broken vase on the floor. "No idea how
that could have happened."
She hadn't even noticed the broken vase. Eyeing it, she shrugged. "No
rush, it will be an easy fix. Thank you for your help," she stated
before the drudge left the room. Now it was all hers! She would enjoy
the time here, even if it may be short. Taking a moment, she stretched
out her arms and spun around with a happy smile and laugh. If only she
could always have such spacious quarters all to herself.
"So I'm guessing you like it," Bryvin chuckled as he watched her spin
from where he stood next to a secret panel in the wall that had slid
open and closed silently.
"What? How did you get here?" His appearance was sudden, and unexpected.
He just chuckled again and smiled at her. "I just wanted to see if you
liked the room." He moved toward a small table on the other side of
the room so as not to alarm her further. He picked up a small runner
figurine and stroked it with a finger. "I'm sorry I have a bit of bad
news," he said turning finally to look at her.
"I do," she then processed the words 'bad news'. "Tell me," Danrina said
looking up at Bryvin. "What can be so bad when I have all this now?"
"I looked at your marriage contract and it's pretty much iron-clad. I
ratified it and filed it myself when I was the steward." He spread his
hands. "I'm sorry but you're going to have to marry Galrad. But..." he
added quickly. "I think we may be able to keep you here at Sunstone
instead of having you leave for his hold. I can do that much."
Marrying Galrad... She had dreamed of how she could avoid that, but now it
seemed it wouldn't be possible. "How," she said.
"Xeladrie," he answered. Though he had several other avenues at his
disposal should the man become difficult on the subject. "She needs
you Danrina," his own need remained unspoken but it showed in his
eyes. "You're her friend and her attendant. I'm sure Galrad will see
the profit to your remaining in such a position."
There was perhaps a hint of something in his eyes, something she hadn't
really noticed before. "If she needs me, maybe I can convince him to stay,
for some time at least."
While he wished he could have married Danrina his wishes were no
longer possible. Yet, he could care for her as much as possible. "I'll
make sure he goes home and leaves you here to attend Xeledrie for the
time being Danrina."
"You'd do that for me?" Nobody, nobody had ever offered her so much before.
These rooms, a polite way of not avoiding, but dealing with her impending
marriage. A smile crossed her face. "I do appreciate all this."
"Of course," he shrugged. "You're serving Lady Xeladrie and need to be
close to her in case she has need of you. It was the least I could
do." He walked toward the door and nearer to her and put a gentle hand
on her shoulder. "I hope you can be happy," he added warmly.
The feel of his hand on her shoulder. No, she put that aside for a moment.
"I hope so too."
"The ceremony will be on Turns Beginning Day," he said. "Your groom
will be here with you after that for a least a week." It wasn't his
job to tell her to try and make the man happy if she could find a way.
He turned to stand directly in front of her. "I'm sorry I can't do
more," he said and a thumb grazed her cheek.
"You've tried," she said, looking into his eyes. "And I appreciate that, I
do."
He moved just a hair closer. "May I kiss you," he asked in a soft voice.
For a moment, just for a moment she considered denying the request, but she
couldn't, not if she was honest with herself about what she really wanted.
"Yes," she said softly.
Slowly and delicately he captured her lips. They were soft and sweet
and unpracticed. A long moment later he stepped back, eyes aflame with
desire. "I must go before I do something I shouldn't," he said.
All she could do was look at him. That had been so wonderful, soft, gentle,
yet somehow full of promise. "I, I think that would be for the best," she
managed to say, because right now she wanted to do that again and who could
tell where that would lead them.
His hand traveled down her arm and he gave her had a quick squeeze
before walking out the door with a small smile she couldn't see.
