Sitting cross legged in the Bowl, R'gelen had all of his supplies spread out
before him. The very large piece of leather kept catching his eye from time
to time. They had shown him how to do this and he had practiced but now had
come the time. This was important since his own safety depended upon it.
Sighing, he grabbed up the scissors and set to work. He'd already taken
measurements and marked it. That had been the easy part.
As always, his curious dragon was nearby, watching him. Iroth understood
this meant they were closer to their goal of flying together. He was waiting
for that day himself since it meant freedom and purpose. He was a dragon,
born to fly. He wanted his rider to know that joy as well.
Genna had been crossing the bowl to get herself a little snack when she
spotted R'gelen and his bronze. She smiled to herself as she remembered her
first experiences in strap making.
"Looking good so far," she commented as she moved towards the young
bronzerider, indicating his leather work. "First time?"
His head came up, revealing a weyrling haircut that had tried to remove most
of his mop of curls. The result was a short crop of dark reddish hair.
Seeing it was Genna, he remembered her from the Hatching. He knew _who_ she
was though and also that her dragon had flown for the first time which meant
eggs. That was important.
"My first set," he replied as he looked down at the leather he was cutting.
"I'm trying to remember how they showed us. I was a vintner, though, not a
tanner or anything." Not for the first time he was thinking he might have
chosen a better craft.
"At least you had a sense of what it is like to work," Genna laughed. "I was
a spoiled holdbrat when I came here. I mean, I had my chores and stuff, but
that was nothing like taking care of a dragon." Then again, nothing really
compared to that, did it? "Want some tips or some company while you work?"
"I lived in a farmhold before I went to the Hall so there was always work."
He considered her offer and decided she had a lot of experience with
strapping large dragons so perhaps it was a good thing. Besides, she seemed
like a nice person. "That would be good, thanks." R'gelen became quiet as he
watched her settle down. He could appreciate her good looks, even as young
as he was. "I left my friends back at Amber Hills. Do you miss it?"
"I don't really. Then again, I didn't really leave on good terms and have
been putting off going back since. It gets harder every day I put it off,"
Genna shrugged slightly as she sat down next to the young weyrling. "Was
your family happy to have you going to the Weyr?"
"They didn't really know till I was already here. Since I was at the
crafthall the searchrider only needed Master's permission." He thought about
his parents at Hatching day and considered their reaction. "They came to the
Hatching though and seemed okay with it."
"That makes things easier I guess. Unless your Master was reluctant to let
you go?" Genna asked, meanwhile observing his work closely. "You might want
to change the angle of your scissors just a little, upright it somewhat, it
makes for easier cutting."
"Oh no. Master Clovente didn't have any problem with it. I hadn't been at
the Hall for very long anyway." He heard her advice and then adjusted
himself, looking back at her for confirmation.
"Yes, like that," Genna nodded. "Doesn't that make it easier to cut?" She
paused for a moment, thinking before continuing. "Is it easier, moving to
the Weyr so soon after you started in your craft, or did you still miss your
home?"
"When I went to the hall it was the first time I'd ever been away from home.
The first few months were the worst. Cause I was so small sometimes the
others were mean. But then I made friends like Corofel and Symion and it
wasn't so bad. Coming here was harder since a Weyr is so different. My size
here isn't the issue, though. It's more cause I don't know how the Weyr
works and what they expect riders to do and to be like. Like...when I let
Iroth into the Dining Cavern." He gave a sheepish look, thinking of G'nir.
"Really, it's been a lot of changes in a short time and it's taking a bit to
figure them out. I have to get used to Iroth and his thoughts and his needs,
the Weyr's ways, new people, and I have to do things differently. It's a
lot. But I have a long time in weyrlinghood to learn it all at least."
"It is a lot to take in," Genna agreed. "Especially after just having gotten
used to a new place months before, I guess. Luckily now you're sure to stay
in one place for quite some time."
"Definitely. I should maybe know this place pretty good after a few turns."
He would be able to focus more on his surroundings by then than on his
dragon since Iroth would be fully grown soon enough.
"And it is a pretty great place to get to know," Genna encouraged the boy.
"I've come to really love Dragonsfall in the time I've been here so far. I
just really feel like I fit in here. I hope you will feel the same."
R'gelen liked it okay so far but dragonmen often moved so he didn't want to
commit to staying. It would be rude to say that to Genna, though, so he kept
quiet. Instead, he just continued to work on his straps, asking her
questions every now and again. It wasn't a bad way to spend a candlemark or
so.
