Follows "An Unfortunate Mishap"
The evening of the weyrlings /between/, A'kades had arranged to have a
moment to speak with Rhosyn and Lenala when next they had a goldriders
meeting. Lanniya's behavior needed to be gone over with them. And he
was curious about how the special training sessions that she was
undergoing went as well.
He knocked on the door of the meeting room. "Are you ready for me?" he
asked, not wanting to interrupt if they were on wing business.
"Come in," Lenala called after a glance at Rhosyn's direction.
The situation room off of Rhosyn's weyr had more comfortable furniture
than some of the other meeting areas in the Weyr so she preferred it for
smaller meetings. It also meant she got to take advantage of the supply of
treats Solieira left for her in her weyr anyway. Waiting for A'kades to
come in and let them know what was going on, she was happily eating a
small cookie.
A'kades stepped into the room and bowed his head. "Weyrwoman,
Weyrwoman's Second. My duty to your queens."
He settled into the chair and steepled his fingers. "I'd like to talk to
you about Lanniya's training."
"Aye-go ahead, weyrlingmaster." Lenala had been doing most of it with
Rhosyn assisting on some of the more difficult things to make sure the
points hit home. The Weyrwoman was curious, though. **Wonder what he's
concerned over?**
"I want you to know that we had an accident when /betweening/ earlier.
No weyrling was lost," he hastened to add, even though he knew they'd
have known if one had been. The dragons would have made that clear.
"A young craftbred weyrling wasn't paying attention to her
visualization and appeared over Garnet Valley instead of at the Star
Stones. Her dragon called for help, and I told the weyrlings who were
grouped to go next I'd respond and they should stay put. Lanniya was
already back at River Bluff because she went first - I don't know if
the message wasn't properly passed by weyrlingstaff or what. I intend
to investigate," he promised.
"She heard Ihlath's distress and went to Garnet Valley to go get her.
I don't know if she took the visualization from Anaeryth from Ihlath
or if she got it directly from the green. Either way, she found it and
then went. It was luck that the visual was good enough to bring them
through. She might have had the best of intentions, but it was a
dangerously impulsive act that could have lost us the newest goldpair."
Hearing that caused Rhosyn's mouth to go from relaxed and loose to a thin
line. Rebelling was one thing, putting one's dragon in danger as well as
the Weyr's future because of impulsive behavior was not okay. Lanniya was
young but Rhosyn didn't think she was stupid. **I may have to revise my
opinion.** Quiet for some time, she digested this information. Even Lenala's
previous mistake hadn't put Vilarth directly into danger. "And what has the
Weyrlingstaff decided to do to punish her as well as make sure nothing of
the sort happens again?" Her tone said if it did, there would be
problems-for them and for Lanniya.
"Oh, dear," Lenala was horrified. "She certainly didn't get that idea from
me," Lenala would have never done anything like that-disobeyed orders or
acted so rashly.
"They've both been placed on two sevendays of restriction. They can go to
classes and do their assigned chores, but they're confined to their weyrs
outside of that. On the restdays, I told them elevator duty and additional
chores. Fadira-I'm assigning extra discipline drills and visualization,
because her part in this was a genuine mistake. For Lanniya, she values
her freedom and ability to travel and making her stay in her weyr seemed
appropriate. If you'd rather give Lanniya a different restday punishment,
let me know. I did tell her I'd be talking to you both about this."
"Lanniya is young aye. From my observation, from her trader upbringing she doesn't understand the necessity of orders and the consequences of her disobedience. I think some exercises in following instruction might be fitting as well as showing her what her
disobedience can bring." Rhosyn looked over at Lenala, wondering what Tsaera had done
to make her realize how large her own mistake was then looked back at the weyrlingmaster.
"We need to fix this early before it can end up getting her or her dragon hurt or worse.
Maybe...she needs to take a trip to see Y'gel and Reeva-to see the permanently injured,
the dragons that can't fly, the ones who don't have dragons anymore." Rhosyn herself had
been brought to heel by being forced to submit through her dragon's wellbeing, but she didn't want to do to that Lanniya. "What do you think Lenala?"
"Sounds good to me." Lenala was more than happy to leave the decision making to Rhosyn.
"You think maybe hearing the injured dragons who want to fly but can't
will shake her?" Lanniya's status as a hears-all should have meant that
she'd heard that pain before. But maybe she had the overconfidence of
youth, the idea that nobody and nothing could touch them.
"Should I handle that on a restday and keep the rest of the restrictions
in place?" he asked, just to make sure.
"She can hear the dragons-aye, but that doesn't mean she chooses to. Briata explained
that to me once. Once you've been doing it for awhile, you can choose what to hear and
what to turn off. But she can't hear the humans, A'kades. Take her to them and the dragons."
If it produced a change in her demeanor then perhaps they could move on. Otherwise, they
would have to find another way to tackle the issue. Rhosyn wanted to avoid a direct intervention, allowing the weyrlingmasters to work it out. "Do it on the day before
the restday, but after drills, along with the other restrictions."
He nodded. "I'll work with them to set that up."
"Would it help if Orlaith or Vilarth talked to her gold and stressed
the importance of following the rules? The rules and protocols are there
for a reason," Lenala suggested. "I know that Vilarth likes things being
in order."
"If A'kades thinks it will, we can try but I don't like the idea. Anaeryth is very young
and I don't want to teach them that way. I'd rather let them come to the conclusion
on their own." In the back of her mind, she was thinking about a senior gold exerting
their will over Orlaith when she was very young and it was bringing up bad memories.
Lenala just nodded and shrugged.
"Let's see how talking to Lanniya works out. Then I'll let you know
what I think. Maybe she will correct herself," A'kades said. He'd talk
it over with the Weyrlingmaster as well.
