Characters: R'gelen, J'kri
Description: R'gelen and J'kri have a rough flying moment.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 2, day 24 of Turn 8

They had completed their first flights and now R'gelen and Iroth were
mobile and loving it. The big bronze loved to stretch his wings and
took every opportunity he had to do so.

Of course his rider had to make excuses to bring them back down
again-like dinner, chores, and other activities or they might be
flying around during all of their freetime. And despite his small weight,
R'gelen knew he had to worry about Iroth overusing his muscles and
spraining a wing and he didn't want to have to explain that to the
weyrlingmasters.

}:Put the straps on! We can go! It's good weather!:{ Iroth was pushing
his big head at R'gelen who was trying to mend a shirt while he had a
moment. With his dragon haranguing him, it wasn't going very easily.
Turning his head, he saw a dragon he half recognized. }:See Rademerth
and his rider are flying! Why can't we?:{

Rademerth made a few fancy moves while J'kri encouraged him. They were
coming back from delivering messages but still had plenty of energy.

**Ok fine, but only for awhile. I need to finish doing this shirt so I have
more
than two to wear.** Sighing, he trudged over and got the set of straps out
and
then started to perform the tricky task of putting them on.

}:Rademerth I am coming to fly with you!:{ Iroth announced, trying not to
shake
because he was so excited. This might have warned R'gelen if he had
been thinking seriously about it.

}:Very good!:{ To his rider, Rademerth said, }:Iroth will fly with us.
He is very excited.:{

J'kri smiled and patted Rademerth's neck. He thought it was cute that
his blue was fond of the young bronze.

Finally, R'gelen had managed to get the straps on. Checking them, he
pulled on his boots and helmet. He didn't bother with goggles since they
weren't
going far or a jacket. Climbing up, he took his time and then buckled and
pulled his own
straps on. **Okay...all set.**

And that was all Iroth needed before the bronze took a flying leap and
surged into the air-all pent-up young dragon muscle straining hard. Even
with his body not yet fully grown, it was easy for him to eat up the sky.
And in his exuberance, he didn't think about slowing down or stopping so
when he headed straight for Rademerth it was clear there might be a problem
if
the blue didn't think fast. R'gelen was too busy hanging on for dear life to
the
neckridge and thanking Faranth he was strapped in to see it.

Rademerth watched the clumsy, eager weyrling with amusement. }:Slow
down, young one. Do not crash into me.:{ The blue shifted a bit to the
left, just to be careful.

Realizing what he was going to do, Iroth tried to put on the brakes, but it
ended up just causing them to go into an awkward tailspin. The young bronze
tried to pull out of it but it was hard. R'gelen watched helplessly as
he felt them start to move sideways and he grabbed his straps.

**Uh-oh!** But before J'kri could even direct his blue, Rademerth
swooped down and grabbed the young bronze. Thankfully Rademerth was a
large blue and was able to right Iroth, hovering for a moment to let
the weyrling recover.

}:You must be careful. You are new to this.:{

J'kri was surprised at his dragon's patient tone. When his wingmates
were out of position, Rademerth often grumbled or outright yelled at
them.

}:Little ones do not know yet,:{ Rademerth told his rider.

It took Iroth a moment to calm down and analyze the situation. The bronze
stayed basically still, just beating enough to stay afloat. }:I believe I am
larger
than I thought I was. And I didn't stop quickly enough. Thank you
Rademerth:{

R'gelen had closed his eyes and when he felt his world stop turning, the
young
weyrling opened them and was surprised to see things looked okay for the
moment.
**Thank Faranth, that was a close one. But I think I might throw up.**
He closed his eyes again and laid his head against the neckridge, taking
deep breaths.

}:Stop that. You are making one of my stomachs feel strange:{ Iroth
was feeling his rider's discomfort, but it wasn't as keen so he didn't stop
hovering.

Rademerth let him go and moved far enough to give the bronze room.
}:You are welcome.:{

"You okay?" J'kri called. R'gelen didn't look good.

Quiet for a few more moments, R'gelen reached for his canteen and took
a few swigs. That seemed to help when the movement stabilized. He opened his
eyes
again and looked over at J'kri. **I really hope I can get used to this.**

"Yeah I think so," he offered as he continued to lean against the
neckridge in front of him for support.

}:Perhaps you should land. Your rider looks ill,:{ Rademerth said.

}:He is thinking at me for me not to move. So I am trying to stay very
still:{
Iroth confessed to the blue, hoping that he was doing the right thing
in listening to his rider to make the situation better.

Rademerth passed that on to his rider and J'kri shouted. "Are you
afraid of flying? Maybe we should get you both down and talk about
it." If there was any serious danger he'd call in one of the weyrlingstaff.

"No! It was just too fast...My breakfast...." He was quiet then as he tried
to
get his stomach to still. Everyone said once Iroth finished growing that the
bronze
wouldn't fly so fast, not like the greens and blues. And then when he
learned control
they shouldn't have these problems. He was so exuberant, though, that
he forgot his rider was learning about flying too and how it felt.

**Alright, get him to land. We don't need him barfing all over.**

}:Iroth, you must land. _Slowly_. Your rider's stomach is upset.:{

}:But my rider doesn't want to land. He wants to stay still.:{ Iroth was
getting
upset now. Torn between the older dragon who he liked and his rider, he
stayed
still for the time being. }:Rademerth says I should land. Can you stand
it?:{

**Give me a few minutes and I'll be fine. It just turned my stomach.**
R'gelen kept his eyes closed for a little while then willed himself to stop being so
nauseous. Finally, he opened them and he settled back from the neckridge, watching
J'kri.

"Are you _sure_ you don't want to land?" the bluerider asked.

"I have got to get used to this. Might as well do it now." For just a
moment, if anyone had known what they were looking at they would have seen a look
of absolute stubbornness that mirrored something R'gelen's aunt might
have sported.

"We'd be happy to help you with flying practice, but uh... I don't
want to be responsible for making you throw up," J'kri said. There was
a fine line between determination and making things worse. "We could
land for a few minutes and start over?"

"You won't. If I do, it'll be my own fault. It'll be okay though. I can work
it out."

After being on an even keel for a while, his stomach had stopped doing
somersaults. Iroth holding steady was different than Iroth spinning around
in the air out of control.

"Well... once around the Weyr, then? You can follow us." J'kri was
still unsure but he wanted to help.

Before he could ask, Rademerth said, }:I will fly slow and careful and
make sure Iroth does the same.:{
