Characters: Rhosyn, K'ran
Description: The two of them have a chat while eating.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 2, day 7 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: U'das, Kapera
K'ran had learned that the general festivities of a hatching always
transformed Weyrs into a place of light and crowd and merriment.
Something about the new lives being born, the bonds being formed,
cheered people up and made them want to seize the day by celebrating. It
was a good ambient energy to be around. It was also a good mixing pot,
as holder family members got to see a Weyr for the first time, visiting
dignitaries from Holds and Weyrs stopped in and made their presence
known, and the occasional dragonriders from other Weyrs came over just
to be a part of the party.
K'ran particularly enjoyed catching up with people he knew from other
locations, including I'fash, the Dolphin Cove bronzerider he'd been good
friends with during his time there. But I'fash had someone else to talk
to, so K'ran went to load a plate full of food and take a seat. It was
pretty crowded since they'd rearranged tables, so it was harder to find
an open seat. There were a few by someone he didn't recognize
immediately. When he headed over, he saw the knots and the hair and
realized it was River Bluff's Weyrwoman, here to watch the festivities
and represent, he assumed.
"Good eve, Weyrwoman Rhosyn. Might I have a seat?" he asked her.
Her head turned slightly and she noted the knots first. Then, Rhosyn
nodded before going back to her plate loaded with food. She had a
waterball match soon so she was eating slower than usual. "Sure. I
didn't see anyone else trying to take it."
He settled into the seat and started on his own meal. But he found
himself curious about the Weyrwoman, so soon enough he started up
conversation. "I hear we'll be facing River Bluff in a waterball match
soon enough. Did you beat your last opponent?"
"Oh aye. We've only lost once this season. And that was early on. I had new
players to get into shape then. Now, things have settled and we've practiced
enough to get a rhythm down." Her eyes lit up at mention of her favorite
sport and her competitive spirit started to raise its head. "How long
have you been playing then? And what position?"
"I started playing at Ista, so that'd be about 7 Turns ago. Took a few
ones off so I'm just getting back into it. I like defense because people
underestimate me."
"Ah hmm. Well good luck then when we see each other at the match." She
smiled and raised her glass just slightly. "Makes sense why I haven't
seen you
though. Never played any of the northern teams really."
"It would be nice to have some diversity in who we play, or else we get
too used to our opponents. With two teams that are being shaken up, at
least it should be new."
"In my experience the teams change every so often." Rhosyn didn't focus on
why. They were in a Pass. Riders got injured or died. And then she had
to find new players.
"It'll be an interesting rematch for sure. I wish Dolphin Cove
finished reorganizing, some of their people are good and it would even
things out to have another contender."
"Aye....we play Vista Point and Far Island pretty regular. Dolphin Cove
not as much but that could change I suppose." Rhosyn knew they had other
worries over there so she didn't bother. Then again, maybe Kapera might know
someone.
K'ran nodded. "It's interesting how interest in sport seems to ebb and
flow. I also miss the days when Weyrs had time to engage in flying
competitions at Hold Gathers. I know I'd like to see what each Weyr
could do in a non-Threadfall situation. Maybe River Bluff has a
special formation or trick we don't."
There had been some outstanding displays, back in pre-Fall days. There
had been nothing like Threadfall to drill for, so some Weyrs had
focused on training for the competitions, because it pushed riders
into fancier and better flying. Plus it had impressed the holders and
reminded them that dragonriders had other purposes beyond carrying
messages and eating their livestock. The tradition had mostly fallen
out of practice since the Pass, though occasionally it happened as a
special event.
Vista Point had never done anything at the Holds, just the Weyrholds.
During the Interval she had known the riders to keep more to themselves
since they didn't need the tithe. "We drill with Dragonsfall sometimes
since we do fly fall together at the border. I've learned things about the
way you fly."
A small smile crossed her face. "When Sunstone had their charter gather...
we all came in in full formation from between. And then we flew over the
Hold before landing in wings. It was quite impressive." Of course it had
been
meant as a reminder to the holders as well as a celebratory movement but
Rhosyn didn't mention that.
"Think our flying's any good?" he asked, curious as to her answer.
"That sounds like it was a lovely moment to see," he added to her second
part.
"You fly well enough. Of course you fight in different conditions
sometimes since
most of your territory is mountainous, colder, and with different
weather patterns."
She almost said that she had been tempted to go there once, but that it
hadn't worked
out. Wisely, Rhosyn kept her mouth shut. "It was a great moment. All the
wings arrayed
and all the dragons. Even the ones that couldn't fly threadfall could
participate in
the maneuver so there were more there."
"I have to admit, I find myself missing the weather patterns of a more
tropical Weyr. Most of my training has been in climates more similar to
River Bluff's - this is the exception." He'd found it rather challenging
to adjust to when he'd transferred here the first time. Sometimes he
missed the hotter climes. Not as much right now, but when snow came again...
"Aye it can be hard to adjust to sometimes." She herself was still hot most
days. "Where did you Impress then?"
"Far Island. Colder than River Bluff, warmer than Dragonsfall. But then
I spent a lot of time at Ista and Dolphin Cove."
"Oh that's where U'das' people is from." If they were any to judge by
the character of the people of that Weyr then K'ran was all right in her
book.
"It was a nice Weyr to have called home. I never disliked being there, I
have a bit of wanderlust, so I enjoy traveling where a new bronzerider
is needed," he explained.
"Oh indeed." And yet he hadn't travelled her way somehow. No matter, though.
"Always needed certainly. Good wingleaders and wingseconds are never in
great supply."
"Dragonsfall had been consistent with theirs, but then this spot opened
up. That might root me here for awhile."
Then again, something could change that. Fall could wound him and his
dragon, or leadership changes could reallocate assignments as the
Weyrleader preferred. But now that he had a Wingleadership on his
history, he could claim a good assignment if he did leave.
"Certainly. It's as good a place as any. And Dragonsfall does have some
beautiful territory for certain." She finished off her plate and looked
back at
the food tables with an uncertain look. "Well K'ran it's been good to speak
with you but I think there's a roll calling my name."
"It was good to speak with you as well, Weyrwoman. I hope we'll chat
again at some point," he told her before she left.
He found himself thinking about how their talk had been rather pleasant.
Despite the rumors about her unconventional habits, she seemed like a
good Weyrwoman for River Bluff. Showed that rumors didn't know
everything. He found himself rather looking forward to the upcoming
waterball match.
