A Little Help

Writers: Chelle, Paula
Date Posted: 26th October 2015

Characters: Rhosyn, Alfginna
Description: Rhosyn enlists the aid of a new Weyr resident.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 2, day 16 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: Solieira, Lenala

"You wanted to see me, Weyrwoman?" Alfginna asked with a timid voice. Standing at the threshold she dropped to a curtsy. Alfginna was still living in the Weyr, having been unable to find work in any of the holds or halls in River Bluff's territory. At least she could make herself useful with her sewing skills.

"Aye have a seat, Alfginna." Rhosyn looked her over for a second time. This meeting was a result of speaking with the Headwoman. The girl hadn't found a job outside the Weyr yet and Solieira only had a few things for her to do. As an afterthought, she had sent Alfginna Rhosyn's way since the Weyrwoman was going to be shorthanded soon. "So I hear you have some freetime."

"Ye-yes, ma'am," Alfginna stuttered. She was worried she was going to be
told to leave the Weyr. While certain aspects of Weyrlife made her very,
very uncomfortable, the people were generally welcoming and friendly.
Besides it did provide her a roof over her head and food to the table. She didn't want to return to Garnet Valley.

"As you know everyone at the Weyr is expected to work to earn their keep. It seems we haven't had enough work for you in other areas so I wanted to see what you might be able to do. My wingsecond is pregnant which is going to leave me shorthanded soon and it might be helpful to have someone who can do errands and other tasks for me." In some Weyrs, the Weyrwoman had her own personal drudge that saw to her own personal needs, much like a Lady Holder's personal maid. Rhosyn didn't know if she needed that or if she just needed a biddable girl to do some of her boring tasks and free her up for other duties.

"I've worked with the Weavers," Alfginna murmured and walked inside. It's
not like she'd been idle. She didn't know how to be idle. "I've assisted my mother and she acted as the Headwoman for our hold, " she replied when she heard Rhosyn's suggestion.

"So do you think you would be up to the job of dealing with me and my
needs?" Of course Rhosyn was aware she had a reputation but she was being
serious here. If Alfginna couldn't stand the stress, then there wouldn't be a point to trying out the arrangement.

"Yes, ma'm, I can," Alfginna answered. "You can't be worse than my mother." She only realized she had said it out aloud when the words were already out of her mouth. She covered her mouth with her hands and looked horrified.

In response the Weyrwoman giggled. "Aye we'll see." Pulling out a list of
things that Rhosyn normally needed during the day and a few extra chores
that she had been putting off due to other duties, she started to go over
them. "With Vilarth's Hatching coming, I need to make sure I have a clean
dress to wear that doesn't need any altering or mending. Also, it would be helpful if you could go over my messages received everyday and identify the most pressing ones so I can save some time."

"I'm a good seamstress, so I can easily mend or alter your dresses,"
Alfginna replied with shy tone. "Lady Lenala already asked me to let out the seams in her dress. How do I know which messages are important?" She was getting a bit nervous.

"Read through them. If it's something that demands an answer quickly, that's important. If it seems like something easy, then it's not." Rhosyn wondered if she might have to go with baby steps on this one.

"Alright," Alfginna mumbled. "Does it differ from hold correspondence much?" she wondered. She had a pretty handwriting, so her mother had let Alfginna reply to letters. As long as she was not asked to talk, Alfginna had done well with her duties.

"Well....I don't know about Hold correspondence so I couldn't say. I get
things from the Holds, the Halls, and the other Weyrs. Sometimes it has to do with invitations, tithes, requests, projects, or other things." It was a lot sometimes but Rhosyn enjoyed the correspondence more than the Records. Just writing down information was dull.

"That sounds familiar," Alfginna said and pressed her fingers tightly
together. She was hoping fervently she was not taking more than she could
handle.

"Well we'll try it and see how things go. To start, you can just work on the messages and my Hatching attire." Rhosyn could give her small things to see how she did and then work up to other things perhaps.

"Yes, ma'am," Alfginna replied obediently. Inside, she was shaking with
nerves.
