Humari

Humari stared at the woman at her door and said nothing. The other
woman was achingly familiar to Humari and she felt her breath catch a
little as she met the bright blue eyes with her own. "May I come in?"
Humari's hand shook as she glanced behind her; Tumaril slept in his
cradle and Taril was busy with his day elsewhere.

"I don't think I should let you in." Humari spoke softly, then
swallowed hard. Her hand tightened on the door, preparing to close it.

"Wait." Vreena caught the door before it could start moving. "Please,
Humari. We really didn't get a chance to talk much when I was here
before. I just want to see you. Please."

Humari shifted on her feet and shook her head, her grip loosening on
the door. "I can't. I'm sorry, Vreena, but I can't. I'm married now
and you shouldn't have kissed me last time. It wasn't right."

The blonde woman took advantage of Humari's uncertainty and hurried
in, closing the door behind her just as quickly. Humari stared at her
and frowned, but before she could speak, Vreena laid a hand over her
mouth. "Don't. Not yet. I just want to talk. I swear."

Humari moved her head away from the hand, trying not to let the
delicate scent Vreena wore go straight to her head. "Fine. Then talk.
But be quick about it." Her arms crossed over her stomach tightly,
waiting for Vreena to speak her peace and be done with it.

"I'm sorry." Vreena burst out. "I'm sorry for what happened and that I
didn't stand up for you. I should have and..." Her voice became pained
when Humari looked away and she tried to get in Humari's line of sight
again. "I hurt you and I never forgave myself for it. And then my
parents sent me away and I couldn't make it up to you. And I wanted
to. I really wanted to. " Her eyes became watery. "Please, Humari,
look at me."

Humari closed her eyes, her lower lip trembling. "My mother beat me,
Vreena. I couldn't get out of bed for a week."

"And I'm sorry. If I could have I would have taken it for you. My
father, he sent me away the very next day to be married off to an old
man who bedded me every night even though I _hated_ it." Her voice
cracked. "We've both suffered. And I know you've suffered more and I
wish I could have stopped it. I was scared."

Humari finally opened her eyes to look at Vreena, taking in the tears
that now leaked down her cheeks. "It's too late, Vreena. I'm married."
She repeated. "To Taril. He's a good husband and I..."

"It's not too late!" Vreena rushed in. "And you still love me." Humari
looked away, tears finally spilling down her cheeks, shaking her head
in denial even as Vreena continued. "I know you do. Does he make you
smile like I did? Do you tell him your secrets? You told me everything
and I told you everything." She continued on, even as Humari turned
away, covering her eyes. "Does he make you feel like I did?" Her words
became desperate things. Vreena hurried to face Humari again and took
her shoulders. "Please, say you forgive me. If you love me, you'll
forgive me!"

Humari burst into soft hiccuping sobs, shaking her head, though
whether she was shaking her head in response to Vreena's question or
if she forgave her, Vreena didn't know. She wanted to believe that it
was that she was still more important to Humari than her disfigured
husband. that the man couldn't possibly compete with her. "I still
love _you_, Humari. I never stopped. I don't care if you have a
husband. He doesn't love you. I _do_!" Humari seemed to shrink back,
but before she could back away, Vreena wrapped her arms around Humari,
holding her tight. "Forgive me. Please. Come back to me." She pressed
frantic kisses on Humari's brow and hairline.

Humari struggled for only an instant before seeming to melt into
Vreena's arms, unable to move away. The pressed kisses on her face
continued to her mouth and she responded with pained ardor, her arms
going around Vreena of their own volition. Vreena's taste and embrace
had been sorely missed and Taril flew from her mind as clutched at her
former beloved with tight hands.

Vreena exalted in Humari's response to her. She knew it! Humari did
love her! She pressed Humari back, pushing her against the back of a
couch as she spoke against her mouth. "I love you. I know how to make
you happy now. Let me make you happy." She bent Humari back just a
little, trailing her mouth down to the swells of her breasts. She
listened to Humari pant in response and pushed down the bodice to
expose the other woman. "You're so pretty. Let me make you happy..."
She bent her head to the breast.

Humari gasped at the sensation, her eyes going wide. Faranth, but it
felt so good! Just like when...Realization took hold. **Taril!** She
pushed Vreena away, jerking her bodice back up. "Get out. Get out
now." Her voice shook, but there was anger in her eyes, both at Vreena
and herself. "You don't get to touch me. Ever. "

"But..."

"No!" Her voice broke. "Leave, Vreena." She pointed at the door, face
flaming with shame at her response and her heart hurting even as she
pointed at the door. "Get out. Don't come back. " She clutched at her
bodice as though she was afraid that her resolve would weaken. "I
don't want anything to do with you."

"Liar!" Tears streamed down Vreena's face. "One day you'll admit it,
Humari. One day you'll admit that no man can give you what I can." She
whirled on her feet and ran out of the door, slamming it behind her.

Humari jerked as if slapped then cringed as she heard Tumaril's
surprised wail at the sudden jarring noise. She hurried to her son and
picked him up, clutching him to her to soothe him. And her. "It's
okay." She murmured as she stood and swayed. Her eyes closed tightly.
"It'll be okay. It'll all be okay."
