Lenala

Lenala

The pain, yet another stomach cramp woke Lenala up. She was
disoriented first, the surroundings looked unfamiliar. She felt surge
of panic, then she realized that she was in the Hatching grounds.
Staff had made her bed there since Vilarth didn't allow her to leave.
She was more difficult than usual. Quick escapes to the bathroom or
latrines were all she had been able to do during past sevenday. She
could feel Vilarth's brooding, drowsy presence. The Gold wasn't quite
asleep. Speaking of latrines, she needed to go, again. Lenala stood
up, waiting the cramp to subside but it didn't. It seemed to intensify
instead. Her heart seemed to pound faster. Vilarth's head came up and
lids opened. The pain was becoming worse, tearing and twisting inside
of her. At first she thought she had lost the control of her bladder,
how embarrassing would that be. She smelled blood. She was bleeding.
"Help," the word came out as a faint whimper. Her legs just seemed to
give out. She fell down, hard.

Vilarth was on her feet now, her roar making the rock walls vibrate.

Volaith had been sleeping on his weyrledge, rather than troubling the
protective queen. At the sound of her distress, he sprang up off the
ledge into the air. }:What is it?:{ he asked his gold mate. }:What can
I do?:{

His rider rolled out of the bed at the sound of Vilarth's roar. That
wasn't the Hatching hum. Then he heard a thump. He reached over,
fumbling in the unfamiliar weyr, and knocked the glow cover off so the
room brightened suddenly. The light showed Lenala was on the floor.

Immediately he jumped from the bed and went to her to help her up.
"Are you alright?"

"I am bleeding. Something is wrong!" There was shrill note of panic in
Lenala's voice.

}: My rider, help my rider! :{ Vilarth was demanding, like Volaith
could do something.

The noise had woken up Rhosyn and probably half the Weyr anyway.
The Weyrwoman rolled out of bed and looked around the weyr blearily.
For a moment she thought it was Orlaith and she touched her dragon's
mind, searching in blind panic.

Her queen had been sleeping too and was now awake and trying to determine
the problem. }:I am fine. It is Vilarth and her rider:{

That was not something Rhosyn ever wanted to hear. Throwing on a tunic,
she ran towards the grounds, trusting Orlaith to fill her in on the way.

Bleeding and panic meant a bad situation. The realization kicked
A'kades' mind into crisis-response mode. His emotions were shunted
aside as his mind ticked through what he needed to do. They needed
Healers, but could she be safely moved? There was one person he
trusted to save Lenala's life.

**Volaith, call Jadirah,** the bronzerider thought, picturing the
Healer who had borne his children. **Tell her to rouse the Infirmary
and to come to the hatching grounds weyr!**

Like most dragons, Volaith didn't like talking to people who weren't
his rider, but his rider's worry for Vilarth's rider, and his own
concern for his mate, meant he responded immediately. A'kades had a
firm image of the woman and he remembered that she was always very
nice to him. }:Vilarth's rider needs you at the hatching grounds,:{ he
said to the Healer.

He stroked her hair as they waited. "We're going to get the Healers
here and they'll look at you. Volaith has called them."

"My baby," was only thing Lenala could say. She was very, very afraid.

He squeezed her hand. "I'll be alright," he told her.

It had been 5 minutes when Jadirah knocked on the weyr's door and then
came in. The Healer was holding a bag with medical supplies in it. She
offered them both a smile meant to be reassuring as she set the bag
down and then crouched by Lenala. "Hey there, how are you feeling?"
she asked the goldrider.

Then she looked at A'kades. "Let's get her settled on the bed so we're
not doing this on the floor. I sent a drudge to the Infirmary to let
them know we have a patient incoming. They'll bring someone with a
stretcher if she can't walk."

"It's bad," Lenala whimpered. She was hovering on the brink of shock.
