Lenala

Lenala

Vilarth had positioned herself protectively over her nest. Her eyes
gleamed red in the dim light. Somehow in her mind, the threat to her
rider's hatchling transferred into a threat to her eggs.

Once Jadirah and A'kades got Lenala on the bed, the Healer began to
examine the goldrider.

}:Vilarth mine is coming. I come as well. We will help you and yours.
The eggs will be safe:{ Orlaith touched the other queen's mind, reassuring
her. She hadn't pushed Vilarth to be calm yet, trusting her to be stable, but
she was monitoring as she moved across the Bowl towards the entrance to
the grounds.

"Your heart's fast. Hold a glow over here so I can see, 'Kad...
Definitely bleeding. I'm going to listen for the baby's heart." The
Healer pressed the stethoscope against Lenala's abdomen, and bit her
lip. "We're going to need to get you to the Infirmary. We need that
stretcher."

A'kades looked outside the weyr. "Vilarth will need to be reassured first."

"See if you can calm her quick. The faster we get her to the
Infirmary, the safer."

Volaith crooned to reassure Vilarth. }:My rider says they will need to
come in to take your rider to the Infirmary. He and the Healer are not
enough to carry her. Will you let them in to make her better?:{

}: NO! :{ Vilarth roared again. She was not letting anybody near her nest.

"Orlaith, she will listen to Orlaith," Lenala said with weak voice. She
was barely conscious and in no condition to calm down her dragon. She
moaned, "please, Faranth, I want to keep my child."

Just then, a very harried looking small woman entered the weyr without
preamble. She'd seen the light and seen Vilarth crouching down in the Cavern.
**Well shardit.** Rhosyn didn't bother waking K'sedel up yet since it might be
something she could handle herself. It might be queenrider business. And she
wanted to know what was happening first. She saw A'kades first, then the healer,
then her eyes flew to Lenala. **That doesn't look good. Oh please
please don't...

I can't lose them. I can't!** Her stomach threatened to jump into her mouth, but
she pushed down the reflex.

}:Vilarth quiet!:{ Orlaith had come into view in the entrance and she was watching the younger queen, her eyes whirling a worried yellow, but her head was steady. }:You are going to make the eggs shake!:{

"What's going on?" Rhosyn asked the healer, wanting a straight answer.
She pushed A'kades toward Lenala, thinking he should be reassuring her.

Drumilla had been alerted, like rest of the Infirmary's night shift.
Now she hang around outside, waiting permission to enter. Storm
relayed her imagery from inside, staying well out of sight of the
frantic gold.

}: Come back! :{ Vilarth called in her panic, feeling her rider to
slip into unconsciousness.

Jadirah turned to the Weyrwoman, calculating what aid the woman could
bring. Her voice was calm as she gave what was essentially an order,
despite the goldrider's rank. "Weyrwoman, could you have Orlaith keep
Vilarth calm enough that the Healers can enter? Until we get her
moved, there's only so much I can do here," she warned.

Then she turned to the bronzerider. "A'kades, go into the hall, get
the stretcher and the Healers there. As soon as Vilarth is calmed, get
them here and we'll take her straight to the infirmary."

The bronzerider felt conflict in his heart. He wanted to stay and
protect Lenala, but his head knew the Healer was right and that the
best thing he could do would be to get the stretcher. He squeezed the
goldrider's hand one more time before standing up, moving past the
Weyrwoman, and heading for the hall.

Rhosyn realized she still hadn't gotten a straight answer but she realized
it might be because Lenala shouldn't need to hear it. With her eyes she gave
the healer a look that said she expected some information soon. "They can come
in now. Would it be quicker to fly her there instead of walking? Orlaith can
carry a stretcher."

Drumilla decided to risk it, seeing A'kades enter the hall. She had never heard of dragon deliberately harming a human. No matter how angry that gold was, she was not going to eat her. She hoped. Despite Storm's protests, she
snatched the stretcher and ran in.

}: Intruder! :{ Vilarth's roaring voice thundered inside her skull and
she winced.

"Can Orlaith carry it as delicately as people walking can? I'm
concerned about the takeoff shock," the healer said frankly. Didn't
dragons need to jump, and wouldn't that shock what they held?

While she waited for Rhosyn's answer, she gestured to Drumilla to set
the stretcher up. Then she and A'kades lifted Lenala onto it. She
checked the pulse - still there, but the goldrider didn't look conscious.

"If Orlaith could block Vilarth's view, and keep her steady, we can
walk the stretcher out now." A'kades said.

Volaith reached out to Vilarth. His mind wasn't as strong as the
senior queen's but he tried to be reasonable anyway. }:They will walk
her to the infirmary. The healer will not let her die. Mine says she
is still there. Just tell her how much we need her.:{

}:Vilarth, you will calm now. Watch the eggs! Protect the eggs! We will
protect your rider!:{ Orlaith was done being patient. Now she was using
her full control to get Vilarth to obey. After all, a gold with hatchlings was
hard enough to control-but one with her rider in danger was harder. An angry
Orlaith was likely worse, however.

"I would think so. Her size means the shock is less than a green or a blue.
Honestly, though she could probably just reach the infirmary shelf so a takeoff
would probably not be necessary." All in all, she wanted to see that Lenala got
help as quick as possible. Rhosyn continued to watch, seeing that Lenala was in
pain. She hated to see that and hated to consider the consequences.

}: I need her! :{ Vilarth screeched for the one last time before quieting under
Orlaith's command. She settled down to nervous vigil over her eggs, her head
swiveling restlessly from side to side. Her rider's life was in danger and all she
could do was to trust these humans to fix her.
