Lanniya

Lanniya

It was raining which meant she was going to stay indoors today anyway. Taking the opportunity and knowing there was a discussion that was going to happen sooner or later, she decided it was going to be sooner. So after sending to the kitchens for some snacks, she invited Lanniya up to her weyr. Rhosyn was comfortable in shorts and a tank top. There was water nearby as always. Picking her seat at the table, she pulled out a few hides with notes and organized her thoughts.

After knocking on the door and being asked to enter, Lanniya came into the Weyrwoman's weyr, looking around with interested eyes. "You asked to see me?"

"Aye I did. Do you know why?" It was a mild question but it was clear Rhosyn was paying attention to the answer as she watched Lanniya enter, gesturing to
one of the empty seats.

Lanniya frowned a bit, then sat. "I guess because I'm getting closer to graduating."

"Good guess but no." Watching her sit, Rhosyn tried to think about how she'd been when she was that young. There were many differences though and she soon lost interest in that comparison. "I want to talk about what happened when you had your first between lesson. A'kades gave me a report but I want to hear it from you."

"Oh. That." Lanniya visibly winced and fiddled with the toe of her shoe that was tucked under her leg. "I kind of acted before I thought and went after another classmate when they made a mistake /betweening/."

**Good she knows she did wrong and she's embarrassed. Hopefully remorseful.** "I know the Weyrlingmasters have already spoken to you about it and what might
have happened. I want to ask...do you understand why that one action you took could have affected every single person in this Weyr? And why it gives me reason to worry very much about you?"

Lanniya nodded. "I've been told." Her nose wrinkled. "I was just trying to help, to be a good goldrider for someone who was scared." She shrugged. "You don't need to worry. I'll ask next time."

"That brings up another question I think. What do you think being a good goldrider means, Lanniya?" She hadn't yet admitted it to herself but Rhosyn felt a bit out of place. She wasn't the mothering sort. She had helped to provide training before for a gold weyrling at Vista Point but it had never been her complete duty like this. Still, she knew what she had needed when she was in the same place and hoped that would be enough.

Lanniya's brows rose. "Well, you help other riders. You're there for them. Like an example or something."

"That is some of it yes. You do have to set an example for others and help them when you can. It is our job to care for our weyrfolk just like our queens take care
of their eggs. And we also have to care for our dragons." Rhosyn scratched her chin for a second, thinking of how to put it. "Part of that, though, is to
realize your priorities. Your dragon must always come first. Before your Weyr, your Wing, or anything else-even yourself. That's why we don't raise our children and some of the other sacrifices."

"What things about you do you think will make you a good goldrider?" Getting to know Lanniya might be half the battle. If Rhosyn could figure her out, maybe she wouldn't be so scary and worrisome.

"I'm too young to think about babies or children." Lanniya put it. "I'm not really wanting them yet anyways." She already knew her dragon came first. She'd yet to meet a rider that didn't do so, and she'd met several. Rhosyn's next question made her pause. "I don't know. Anaeryth chose me, so I figure that something in me was good for it." Her lower lip thrust out as she thought, then she brightened. "Well, I'm good with people. I like talking to them and I can talk to their dragons which helps too sometimes."

"I think once you have more threadfall experience in general, we can figure out how that particular ability might help us more. I have a few ideas, but I'm not sure. You're not the first weyrwoman to have it, you
know. Have you ever read about the others?" Rhosyn knew they had history lessons during weyrlinghood and some from the harpers, but she didn't know how much Lanniya had with the traders.

Lanniya nodded. "Sure. Lessa and Torene mostly. But I'm not really like either of them. I don't think it would do much good to try either. I think I would just disappoint people if I did."

"You don't have to be like Lessa and Torene. However, you might be able to figure out a way that you can use your ability to make you a better weyrwoman like they did. If you have it, why not use it to make yourself better? Can you think of ways to do that?" Rhosyn only knew how it worked from Briata and that was different
since Lanniya had actually Impressed.

"Better how?" Lanniya tilted her head to the side. "I just use it. It's me."

"That's what we have to figure out. But okay for example....if you can listen to dragon conversations that mention their riders are feeling poorly that might clue you in on who needs a visit or if someone in the wing might need to sit out on drills or threadfall." Rhosyn had been thinking about it but she didn't exactly understand the ability to its fullest extent so it was hard to come up with a lot of applications.

"I'd have to purposefully listen. Most of the time I just sort of tune it out. Like noise in the back of my head that I ignore for the most part."

"Well I suppose we'll have to see if it's worth it. It's just a thought. Lanniya, from now on though, please consult someone before you commit to an idea like that again. The next mistake might be one that changes your life forever and we would all break apart
if that happened. Allright?" Rhosyn's eyes indicated that she seriously hoped this was the last meeting like this though she thought otherwise.
