Raghad waited his turn to see the Lord Holder. He was patient man so
the wait didn't bother him. He leaned against his cane, which he
really didn't need. It was part of his act of elderly holder. He
watched the people passing by.
The young Understeward approached the elderly holder and bowed. "My
Lord will see you now sir. If you just follow me?" He wasn't quite
sure if he'd need to help the man or not but he offered his young and
strong arm just in case.
Raghad ignored the arm. He wasn't that old yet. Perhaps he moved
slower and his joints were stiff but he could still move on his own.
"Show the way, lad," Raghad replied, although he knew very well where
the office was.
"Yes sir," he said respectfully and led him the short way down the hall.
"Holder Raghad," he announced as he held the door open.
"Welcome," Bryvin smiled and walked around his desk to meet the
elderly holder with an amused look. "That will be all Vespid. Please
have them bring some refreshments." She swept his arm toward a
comfortable arrangement of chairs and sofa inviting the Holder to sit.
"Yes sir," the young steward said and closed the door gently behind him.
"My Lord," Raghad's bow was stiff, his back just didn't bend that
well. "I take you're been well? And how is your lovely wife?"
He took the offered seat.
"Increasing," he smiled and took the chair next to the elderly Holder.
He folded his hands in his lap, "and how is _your_ wife?"
"As lovely as ever," Raghad replied. "And still enjoying shocking all
the other ladies."
Bryvin chuckled. He'd been on the receiving end of Runfreya's flirting
himself in the past and while there was 'no joy' at the end of the
line the experience was always stimulating. "She has her handle on
that for certain."
"Yes, which isn't good for my health. I do worry she picks up a wrong
man who doesn't like the door slammed against his face and he hurts
her. Then I have to kill him," Raghad said with long suffering sigh.
"Death is never profitable." It was hard to say if he was serious or
joking.
Bryvin chuckled. He had no doubt the old man would follow though or at
least make certain his wishes were carried out by someone capable.
"I'm sure she has the sense to stay away from that sort of man," he
tilted his head. "So what brings you here today Raghad?"
"Men are unloading our tithe from Lady Breeze as we speak, here's the
inventory," Raghad replied. He handed over the hide. This was stuff
normally handled with the Steward. "There's a record I would ask you
to safe-keep for me," he continued, getting in to the actual business.
"Excellent," Bryvin nodded as he took the document and set it
carefully beside him. Their tithe for the Weyr would be leaving in two
sevendays so some of the largess would find is way directly into the
Weyr's warehouse. His head then tilted at the Citrus Bay Holder. "Of
course Raghad."
"It's my last will and testament. I would like to have it stored
somewhere safe, where my family doesn't get it into their hands," the
old holder explained further. "Knowing them, tampering it wouldn't be
out of options."
"A good idea," Bryvin nodded. "Though I'd rather you didn't have to
plan for that. Have you designated your Heir?"
"It's all in there," Raghad nodded towards the sealed document. "I
rather keep the name secret. You'll will find out when it's time to
open it."
Bryvin chuckled, the elderly Holder was at least as competent at his
job as Bryvin knew himself to be. In fact, his placement and Raghad's
age were key factors in Bryvin's election to Lord Holder. Had Raghad
been twenty turns younger, he might have had quite a battle claiming
Sunstone. "Then I'll see when it's time. Not too soon I hope," he
smiled. "How is the Hall treating you?"
"I'm selling them food and building materials as fast as I can produce
them," Raghad replied. "Although some people in Citrus Bay have
started to complain since ships by pass the Hold now, preferring the
Hall's better port. They can't see that those ships still get their
supplements from us. I haven't seen seacrafters raising tubers yet."
Bryvin nodded. "But we knew that would happen when we offered them the
land. I'm guessing you're still getting enough shipping to send your
own goods out. Am I right?"
"Yes, you are. It isn't worth the cost to haul the clay to the
Seacraft Hall," Raghad replied.
"Well if that changes we'll deal with it. Your clay is important to
many holds outside of Sunstone and we will be sure it is delivered."
He half smiled. "Perhaps you need a few more waterfront dives the
seacrafters might like to visit."
"I rather not turn my Hold to that kind of place. We have a tavern
that's neat and safe," Raghad replied. He could live with less drunken
sailors.
Bryvin shrugged. Sunstone was larger than Citrus Bay with a much
longer waterfront. There was enough room for both in his Hold. Sailors
familiar with the hold seldom trespassed on the peace of it's
residents more than once. His guards saw to that.
"Well," he smiled. "Anything else you'd like to discuss?"
"Well, my fosterling is now old enough to marry, but my wife is
already handling that matter," Raghad said. "Hadrid isn't far behind
her."
"Well," Bryvin nodded. "If she needs any help I'm sure Lady Xeladrie
would be happy to, after she's out of her confinement." Raghad's wife
was responsible for the girl and he was sure they would find a
suitable match for her. The offer was simply a matter of formality
from a Lord to his beholden.
"I have confidence in my wife's talents in finding a good match,"
Raghad replied calmly.
"As you should," he smiled. "She is very competent in her position.
And she's very loyal to you which is more than most men can say." It
was a well known fact that Raghad's Lady didn't stray no matter how
much flirting she might do. In fact he was reminded of something his
father had once told him. 'Flirting is attention without intention.'
That most certainly described the Holders lovely wife.
"Aye, that's her," Raghad said.
