Xeladrie was awoken in the middle of the night by a cramping
sensation. She fumbled with a glow basket on the nightstand, letting
more light into the room. There was the urge to go to the necessary
again. She'd learned the path well enough to go in no light by now,
but it didn't hurt to be able to see where she was going.

She pushed herself up out of bed and fumbled her way along to the
necessary. Unfortunately she was only halfway to the chamber when she
had to stagger against the wall. Her back hurt more than she expected
it to. Once she got to the bathing chamber, she settled to relieve
herself. The cramps were still there. It felt rather like she had to
go to the bathroom. And she was beginning to feel nauseated. Being in
the necessary wasn't making her feel any better, not like she'd hoped.

**I'll take a walk,** she thought when she was back in her own room.
Maybe she could get water from the kitchens, crackers for her stomach.
She went to pull out a robe to wear down when she felt a spasm and
leaned against the wall to catch her breath. "Oh!"

And liquid was leaking down her leg. **Please don't let me have wet
myself.** she thought.

"M'Lady," the night drudge said as she came quietly into the lady's
room to tend to the chamber pot. "Are you alright?"

Xeladrie started as she saw the drudge. She hadn't expected to see
anyone else. The desire to complain rose up in her. "I wanted to take
a walk, but now I don't feel as good."

The girl looked down in the dim light and saw the glint of liquid on
the floor but there was no smell of... "My Lady," she exclaimed. "Did
your water break?"

"Isn't it supposed to hurt?" Her mother had briefly gone over the
facts of life, and she'd spoken to the Healers some about what to
expect, but she felt woefully unprepared. "It just felt like I, well."
She blushed.

"What do I do?" she asked softly, sounding every inch like a young girl.

"I... I should get someone Lady," the girl bobbed but then she
straightened. "But let's get you comfortable first ma'am." She stepped
next to the Lady. "Chair or bed?"

"I think...the chair? Will the Healers come here?" She wasn't sure
about going to the Infirmary yet.

"Of course m'lady," the young woman nodded. "Lean on me ma'am," she
offered her strong arms to the beautiful Lady Holder. "The pains will
start soon enough," she added. "Should I get your husband?"

Xeladrie took the woman's arm and let herself be helped into the large
stuffed chair. Nerves welled up as she realized this was it. She was
having the child.

At the drudge's question, she paused. She wasn't sure she wanted her
husband yet, but she supposed she'd have to have him here. It was his
child...their child... **Please be a boy.**

"Please," she finally said.

"Yes, m'lady," she said as the lady eased into the chair. Then she
went to the connecting door and into the lord's bedchamber. "My Lord,
the lady has started her labor," she called softly and crossed to the
side of his bed to make sure he'd heard her.

"What?" Bryvin emerged from a deep slumber.

"My Lady is having the baby," the drudge repeated.

"Get the healers," he said a bit more sharply than he would have
normally and she scuttled off. He threw a robe around him as he would
have been in his altogether otherwise and hustled into his wife's
bedchamber.

"How are you doing," he said intensely and knelt by her side taking her
hand.

"So far I'm here," she said, giving it a light squeeze back. "My back
hurts."

"Where," he asked as he reached around her and tried to rub her back
like the midwife had showed him to do. "Is that good?"

"Yes, it is," she said.

Her hand gripped the one he wasn't using to rub tightly. "I'm a little
frightened," she admitted. "I know we practiced but - "

To tell the truth so was he but he wasn't going to let her see it.
"You'll do fine," he smiled.

Just then the drudge along with the midwife came back through the door
with stacks of clean cloths and a pair of drudges carrying the
birthing chair from the next room.

The midwife smirked at the Lord Holder and pointed at his room. "You
may wish to dress m'lord," she said and turned quickly to the Lady.
"We need to get you out of this wet gown."

Bryvin realized his robe was open and left nothing to the imagination
so quickly stood and started back through the connecting door to his
room. "I'll be right back," he assured his wife.

Telemon had been on call when the drudge came to fetch him. So it didn't
take him long to arrive. He brought his medical bag and firelizard. As soon
as she saw the Lady Holder, Ena started to humm.

"My Lord, My Lady, " the master healer greeted with a bow.

"Master Telemon. I think the baby is showing up," Xeladrie said, trying to give him a smile.

Bryvin nodded at the healer and disappeared back into his room to get
dressed.

Glimmer lifted her head from the table and began to hum in response to Ena.

Bryvin's little brown Treek winged into the room and perched on a
curtain rod to hum near the other flits.

Glancing the firelizards, Telemon smiled. "Yes, that seems to be the
case." No matter how many babies he delivered, it never got any less
exciting. He put the bag on the table and knelt next to her. "May I
have take a look how far along you are?"

The number of people had rapidly increased - from just the maid to the
maid and her husband and now the Healer. The hums of the flits was
something she thought she would have found annoying, but it was
actually distracting. Now that she was awake and thinking, she could
feel the contractions much stronger, and she wondered how she could
possibly have slept this far.

"Yes, of course," she said.

Telemon did the necessary exam as quickly and gently as he could.
"You're almost fully dilated. It shouldn't be long now, before the
baby's head starts come through the birth canal," he told them. He
felt around her swollen belly (after asking permission, of course),
trying to get a view of the baby's position. "Yes, someone is eager to
get out," he smiled encouragingly.

"Just breath thru the contractions. You will notice the difference
when the time to push comes."
