"Morning sir," F'nix greeted jauntily, in spite of the fact that he had clearly been cleaning up Nisith's dung. "Nice day."
D'kere was on his morning rounds to see how the Weyrlings were doing, he generally liked to start with the male barracks since he never wanted to chance walking in to see a half-dress female Weyrling.
"Good morning, F'nix, how is Nisith?" he asked.
"He's very well. He has a good appetite." As this morning was clear evidence of. "He's growing so quickly. I can hardly remember how small he was."
"Keeping his hide well oiled then, I hope?" D'kere questioned.
"I'm doing my best," F'nix said ruefully. "It's seems like by the time I reach the end, he's grown and I have to start over." Not that he minded.
D'kere nodded, with a fully grown bronze he knew the feeling. "Is Weyrlinghood what you thought it would be?"
"No, not really," F'nix admitted. "I'm not sure I gave it much thought beyond impressing."
That was rather short-sighted, D'kere thought, but that was the typical thinking of a teenager. "Is your family supportive of your Impression?"
"Not really." F'nix shrugged. "It's no big deal. The Weyr is my family now."
The Weyrlingmaster's Second wasn't surprised, many Candidates that came from Holds had a similar experience. "That's a good way to look at it. I had better keep on my rounds. I will see you for drills after breakfast."
"Yes sir." F'nix's stomach rumbled. He was always hungry these days, he could almost eat as much as Nisith. "Thank you sir."
Tipping his head to F'nix, D'kere moved on to visit with the next Weyrling.
