He had not been this hungover in a while. Even with the partly cloudy skies diluting the sunlight, it was too bright, and his head hurt. But even with those distractions, he made himself help a member of the tithe train saddle up the runnerbeast he would ride back to their hold. From there, he would find another caravan and strike out for Dolphin Cove Weyr's territory on his next mission.
After that, Eionen had an inkling of what he might do next, and he wasn't looking forward to it. But after well over twenty years, maybe it needed doing. Then he might return to the Harper Hall for a while, where he could do less damage.
As he worked, he kept glancing toward various entrances, but in his hungover state, he didn't figure it out until he was mounted and ready to go: He was looking for A'kua. He was hoping, irrationally, that his son would come running into the Weyrbowl and apologize for his harsh words, and ask him to stay a little longer. Eionen stared at the entrance he had walked through as guided by Talwynn, and waited, wishing, praying to the Ancients that maybe it wasn't too late, that perhaps-
"Harper, we're going," the tithe train's leader called.
Eionen snapped out of it. Of course A'kua wasn't there. And if he was, it would only be to fling an insulting gesture his way, just to twist the knife a little more. Eionen lowered his head, heart hurting even more than his head, and nudged the runner's sides with his heels to follow the train out.
He wanted to look back, but he never had before. So he didn't this time, either.
Besides, there was nothing to see.
