Opening the window to the bedroom to let in the cool sea breeze,
Humari breathed a sigh of relief and the cooler air kissed her cheeks.
Tumaril was sleeping, the living area was clean and the evening supper
was slow roasting. It was because of the heat in the kitchen that
Humari had escaped into the cooler, dimmer bedroom.
She didn't hear the knock at the front door, nor did she hear it open
quietly and then close. With her eyes shut to listen to the sound of
the outside, the soft clearing of the throat surprised her. She
whirled, hand going to her throat and eyes wide.
Vreena stood in the doorway to her bedroom. Buxom, lovely blonde
Vreena. Duplicitous.. she swallowed hard as Vreena just looked at her
with wide, sad seeming eyes. Humari gathered herself quickly. "Get
out. You're not supposed to be here and you know it." She pointed at
the door.
"I know." The voice was husky. "I'm not here to cause trouble, I
swear." Vreena's voice was thick. "You have to help me, Humari."
Humari swallowed with difficulty. "With what?" Why should she help
Vreena with anything?
"My parents...they've been talking to your mother. About Bortem."
That was enough to make Humari pale. It didn't take much intelligence
to figure out what was being planned. "They're arranging..."
Vreena hurried in, nodding. "Yes. My father thinks it's a good match
because of who your mother is. He doesn't care what I want. Why is
your mother agreeing to it? She knows about me. She knows how I feel."
Tears glittered in her eyes; Humari reached out, almost touching
Vreena before catching herself and drawing her hand back. The action
made the tear leak from Vreena's eyes to slide down her cheek. "I
can't marry him, Humari! Just thinking about it makes me want to sick
up!" She visibly trembled and stared at Humari with wide eyes.
"Please. Help me."
Hugging herself, Humari still kept her distance from Vreena, but her
expression was pained. "I don't think I can. I don't know how I can."
"Bortem...it can't be Bortem. Not after he told on us! No, don't turn
away, please!" Vreena stepped forward to face Humari's back. She
grasped at her and held her from behind. "I'm sorry! Just help me,
please." Her arms locked around Humari's waist and she heard a soft
sob. Unseen, a flicker of triumph gleamed in her eyes, but it was
swiftly covered by sorrow. "I won't bother you again, I swear." She
took a risk and lightly kissed the side of Humari's neck and secretly
delighted in the shiver that she felt under her lips.
Humari shook her head again, but the movement was less certain. "How?"
Her voice was cracked and her head tilted to the side, looking away,
but not moving away from Vreena's grip.
"Do you know anything that would make my father refuse the match?
Anything at all?" Her hand flattened against Humari's abdomen, not
moving, but right under the sternum, fingers scarce away from the
curve of Humari's breast.
Humari gripped the hand, but didn't move it. She licked her lower lip
as her mind worked. She had been lucky in her match with Taril. He was
a good man and took good care of her. She was even beginning to really
enjoy their lovemaking, though she still dreamed of Vreena touching
her as Taril often did. But Vreena would not be so lucky with Bortem,
especially if her mother had her way. She would be miserable and she
would also be...related. It was almost too much to bear. "Bortem...he
gambles. He's always gambling." She'd paid attention to what had
happened with Taril and Bortem. "He owes Taril a great deal of money."
Unseen, Vreena smiled widely. So that's who held Bortem's leash. She
straightened her expression as Humari turned her head. "Thank you."
Vreena rested her brow against Humari's shoulder as though in relief.
"My father won't want that for me." She kissed at Humari's shoulder
lightly.
The closeness to Vreena was making it hard to think. The scent of her,
the softness of her mouth. Faranth, but it felt good! "We can't..."
Her voice was a whisper. "You need to stop."
Vreena turned her face towards Humari's neck and planted open mouthed
kisses along its length, reveling in the soft gasps. "No one will
know. I won't tell."
"I can't...Taril..." Humari's head tilted back with a whimper.
"I love you. I love you, Humari. Don't turn me away...please. Just
once I want to be with you. Really be with you." Her mouth traveled
over her cheek towards her mouth. "Let me. You won't even have to
touch me. Let me love you like you really need." Slowly, she pushed
Humari back towards the bed, her eyes feverish with sudden intensity.
Humari's lips found Vreena's and when her back hit the bed, she
immediately stopped. "No. Not here. I can't." She shook her head
quickly and ducked away. Not on their bed. Her and her husband's bed.
It wouldn't be right.
Frustration bloomed in Vreena's face. "Why?" Her voice was almost a
wail. "Why not! You love me! I can see it in your face!"
Humari's eyes shut as she shook her head. "No. I can't do that to my
husband. It's not right."
Vreena's face crumpled and real tears began pouring down her face. "He
wouldn't know!"
Humari clutched at her stomach, her insides roiling. "But I would! I
would know. He's been good to me, Vreena. So good to me when he didn't
have to be. He knows about me. All about me. And he is still good to
me."
Vreena stared at her in shock. "He knows? But..."
"He knows. And he kept me anyway. He gave me a son. A beautiful little
boy. He's never hurt me. He...I..."
Vreena bowed her head and wiped her eyes. "I'd do anything to be with
you again, Humari. I love you."
"We can't." Humari's voice was a broken whisper.
"I'd even take him if I could have you too." Vreena scrubbed at her
eyes. "I'd do anything. Anything!" She rose and hurried away from the
bedroom, determined to let the final thought seep into Humari's mine.
She'd do anything. Not Taril. She'd let Yriadha know about what she'd
discovered and they could cease this Bortem ruse. Then, she could worm
her way closer to her goal.
