Even though R'gelen was now living in his own weyr and had officially finished weyrling training, he knew he was too young for the wings. After asking around, he had been told he would stay on in the weyrling wing but his duties would change. Curious as to what that might entail, he walked down quickly to G'nir's office when he got the summons. Maybe now he would get some answers. Adjusting his jacket and making sure all his tunic buttons were fixed, he knocked on the door once. It was strange still knocking on the Weyrlingmaster's office door to find G'nir instead of the Weyrleader's door. It was a sore subject, though, so he never commented on it.
"Get in, R'gelen," G'nir let him. "How are you been? Take a seat." G'nir gestured the boy towards his desk. As it was his habit, the desk was neat and meticulously organized. G'nir walked around to take his own seat behind the desk.
Plopping into the seat, the young bronzerider looked up to the older one. "Well, I've been delivering firestone now. Thread is some nasty stuff, let me tell you. And I go to Amber Hills sometimes to see Corofel. Other than that...about the same." He didn't broach the subject about his mostly lack of a social life here at the Weyr. Most of his classmates had graduated and gone on to wings, leaving him behind. He hadn't known anyone else here so that was that.
"Yes, that's why I wanted to talk with you, about your duties. It will take Turns before you're old enough for fighting wings. You will continue delivering firestone during the Falls," G'nir said. "You'll be assigned additional duties. Do you have any preferences?"
"Ummmm well what sort of duties can I choose from?" He leaned forward, wondering if G'nir had a list or something to look at. Perhaps a whole new world was going to open up to him and he could do more important things.
"You're qualified to do transport duty, you can do sweeprides and watch duties. Or you can work with the weyrlings, assisting the Staff. I could also use a personal assistant, to run errands and organize records," G'nir listed out. "As you can see, there are much more dragonriders to do than ThreadFalls. During most of those duties, you would be paired with more experienced rider."
Transport duty was fun. He got to go different places. Sweeprides weren't that great and watch duty was boring, but he supposed it was better than nothing. "Oh....I could help you I guess. And transport duty sounds okay. I don't know if the weyrlings would listen to me just yet seeing as how I'm still a bit...smaller than some of them." He looked down and wished again that his growth spurt would come in. It was hard washing all of Iroth sometimes.
"Authority is more than just age and size," G'nir said "And it can be learned. But if you're not comfortable with it, you're not forced work with the Weyrlings. We can fill your days with transport duties and assisting me," he continued. "Experience from those duties will serve you well in the future."
"That sounds good for now. Maybe if I get bigger and older, I could do some of that later. One of the drudges said if I eat my fingerroots I will grow. Honestly, I've eat so many I don't want to see another one." He groaned, then pushed forward till he was on the edge of the seat. "So what sort of duty schedule will I have now?"
"It's basically same as regular wingrider's schedule, you do the same candlemarks, Just the duties differ," G'nir replied. "I'll send you a copy when its finished."
"Yes sir." He was trying not to look super excited, but inside he was all trundlebugs. This was going to be great! He was going to help G'nir and learn all about being a real deal bronzerider and everything! That way when he was big enough to get into a real wing, he would be old hat at all that. A certain greenrider came to mind and he thought about tracking down Talwynn to tell her about his new duties. He had learned a lot from her on sweeps and liked her.
"Have you any more questions?" G'nir asked.
"Ummm....not right now I don't think." He got up and waited to be dismissed since he knew what that meant better than anything else. He was so excited. He could head out and tell Corofel maybe over evening meal.
"Alright, I'll see you later then, you're dismissed," G'nir said.
