Sometimes it still caught her by surprise, like a kick to the stomach.
Genna heaved a deep sigh as she took the dress from her closet. She'd
been looking for something comfortable for her night in, but had
happened across the damn thing instead. It was the dress she'd worn at
Saibra's last hatching. Now there was a feast she preferred to forget
as soon as possible.
~*~
There really was no more escaping, was there? Genna had put off
joining the feast for as long as possible, busying herself with
assorted little tasks that brought her away from where she didn't want
to be. But she knew it was expected of her to show her face at the
feast at some point and she knew she couldn't keep making excuses
forever. So she stepped into the crowd of people, keeping her head low
so as not to draw attention, and begged Sweet Faranth and all her
eggshells *not* to bump into the River Bluff Weyrleader pair. Pair.
Ugh.
This was K'ran's home so Rhosyn had let him loose to visit. During
that time, she'd escaped to the food tables. The River Bluff Weyrwoman
had decided to use the healers' encouragement to remember to eat as an
excuse for her indulgences. Then the dancing had started and they had
shared a few turns. Walking off the dance floor with K'ran, she waved
over to one of their greenriders who had shown up for the Hatching.
K'ran escorted Rhosyn off to the side, picking up a glass of wine and
offering her one. "It was nice to be sharing the dance with you. I
hope you won't feel abandoned if I catch up with some more friends?"
he said.
"Abandoned? Ah no...I'll just go rest my feet." She gave him a short smile.
She was a big girl and could easily find someone to talk to surely. And she
understood his need to visit with people he knew even though she didn't
really have many of those herself. Perhaps her nephew was somewhere about
though....
Perhaps keeping her head low hadn't been such a smart move after all.
Because she was too busy being inconspicuous and blending with the
crowd, Genna wasn't paying enough attention to where she was going and
'lo and behold, she bumped right into the two people she was so
desperate to avoid. A deep crimson immediately spread from her cheeks
to the rest of her face.
"Uhm. K'ran.." Adrenaline pumped as she told herself to be cool, to
look cool, but she knew she wasn't succeeding at either by a million
miles. "Weyrleader K'ran. And Weyrwoman Rhosyn. My greetings to you
and yours."
Rhosyn turned and saw the girl she'd spoken to a few times before.
She'd seemed a very good young goldrider and it had crossed her mind a
few times before that Saibra was lucky. Now, she was remembering the
remark that K'ran had made before and her eyes slanted over to him
before she faced Genna. "Clear skies to you, Genna. I hear very good
things about both you and Lissath. A fine pair."
There were many people K'ran was looking forward to seeing again, even if
it was just a few moments of congratulation. Some of them were
wingmates he had led at Dragonsfall, who he'd been friends with for
awhile and wanted to catch up with. And then of course, there was
the young goldrider who was often in his thoughts. Genna, who his eyes
had been scanning the room for. Genna, who he couldn't see anywhere.
And then he could see her. She'd stepped right in front of them, and a
smile curved his lips upwards. He was so pleased to see her.
But she was blushing. Was she not happy to see him?
"Hello, Genna. I hope you and Lissath are well," he said genially.
Something snapped inside of Genna as she saw K'ran's reaction, like he
didn't have a care in the world. She had hoped that perhaps he'd look
a little guilty, tormented at the thought of keeping her at distance
for so long. But she saw none of that and it raised a fury in her she
reserved only for very rare occasions. But it wouldn't do do make a
scene here. Besides, Rhosyn probably didn't know about their past and
it would look bad if she blew up in front of her.
So all she did was stand up a little straighter, ice in her eyes as
they rested on K'ran for a quick nod of acknowledgement, but quickly
turning pleasant as she spoke to Rhosyn. No, she'd never wanted to be
like her mother, but right now she was grateful for her lessons. A lot
could be said without speaking any words. "Thank you, Rhosyn, that
means a lot to me coming from you. It's nice to see my reputation has
preceded me to other Weyrs. And how is your beautiful Orlaith doing?"
Not the best at social cues, Rhosyn was still not stupid. She was
watching K'ran from the corner of her eye, wondering if he knew just
what Genna was doing. It was obvious the young rider wasn't happy, not
at all. The Weyrwoman wasn't going to be the one to point that out in
public, though, not at all. Let Genna have her pride and deal with it
on her own terms. "Well she is rather larger than normal these days,
which is a good sign. The Flight was a good long one so I'm sure we're
both expecting quite a few eggs. It'll be good for the Weyr and we can
always use the weyrlings." Unspoken was the assertion that it would be
good for K'ran, to support his sudden rise to leadership. Pausing, the
curious Weyrwoman decided to try another subject. "I hear you've been
spotted at a few waterball matches."
K'ran couldn't figure out what was going on. Genna seemed closed off.
He wasn't sure why. He'd really been looking forward to seeing her
today, and dancing. The mention of flight and eggs made him wince
slightly, wondering if that was going to be a sore subject.
"Have you been spectating or did you talk to Saibra about the team?"
K'ran asked, trying to draw her out.
Rogueth sensed his rider's distress and decided to take things into
his own talons by asking the gold.
}:Lissath,:{ he greeted deferentially. }:Are you and yours well?:{
The mention of the 'good long flight' was like a knife to the chest,
but Genna tried her hardest to hide it. "The more eggs, the better,"
she agreed. When waterball was mentioned, she slightly grimaced again.
"I have been to quite some matches, yes, but not so much recently. It
was a common interest with a friend of mine, but we've grown out of
touch, so I've been directing my attention to other interests." If
that wasn't a clear message, she didn't know what would be and she
really couldn't stand another minute of this awkward conversation. "If
you'll both excuse me, I believe I see one of our Holders there that I
haven't greeted yet."
**Was that about me?** K'ran thought when he heard the way Genna
phrased it. Before he could think of what to say, she was making her
excuses.
"Yes, of course you have your duty. But it _was_ good to see you
again," he said as she began to retreat.
Trying not to laugh at the look on K'ran's face, Rhosyn nodded easily.
"Hope you enjoy those other interests then. And perhaps we'll see you
again at River Bluff when it's time for our eggs to hatch." When Genna
had almost gotten out of earshot, she turned to her Weyrleader and shook
her head. "Well she's mad at you."
"So she is," K'ran said quietly, thinking about how he hadn't seen
this coming. Then he forced a smile onto his face, trying to think of
all of the friends he could see again while here.
~*~
Perhaps only there had he finally noticed her pain, Genna thought to herself with a deep sigh, only because Rhosyn pointed it out to him. She struggled to hang the dress the furthest way back in her closet, where she wouldn't happen upon it too soon again. Some memories were best buried deep.
