K'ale

K'ale

Even though Lanniya had come back safe, things still hadn't been easy.
The girl had caused too many problems. And Rhosyn still had a Hatching
to prepare for amongst other things. Still, the Weyrwoman had meant to
ask Lanniya about that nice young brownrider at some point. Or maybe she
could tell Lenala and let her bring it up. He seemed to have a good head on
his shoulders anyway.

With her queen as big as a Hold and full of eggs, Rhosyn wasn't
exactly able to just head over to Dragonsfall to see about this
brownrider. Thankfully, she didn't have to. Wondering if it would be
better just to do a quick inquiry or if it might be better to ask the
boy directly so she could get a good look at his face, she mulled it
over. Deciding on the latter, she told Orlaith what she wanted.

}:Brown Imalkyth, my rider request yours to be present soon. She would
meet him in her weyr:{ Orlaith passed on, hoping the urgent tone
sounded more official than dire.

K'ale dropped his drink in his lap and blinked. **Me? She wants to see
me?** He stood and brushed at his lap. "Ahhh fardles," his friends
laughed and he squinted at them on mock anger. "I gotta go," he said.

"Better change first," M'pan called after him and chortled with the others.

"Very funny," he shot back repressively. But he was out the door and
changed in minutes. He could only imagine what kind of trouble he was
in if the River Bluff Weyrwoman wanted to see him.

He shook his head as he sailed by the Watchdragon after getting his
clearance. But there was nothing he could do until he met her. He
took a deep breath and slid from Imalkyth's back and bowed to the egg
heavy queen. "Weyrwoman?" he called but he didn't walk toward the
door. "It's K'ale from Dragonsfall."

"Come in, brownrider," Rhosyn replied. She was sitting in the small room
off to the side of her weyr that held a table and chairs along with a place
to serve food. She kept it stocked with a few things, but usually she used
the room for meetings instead of her office when she could get away with
it. The Records Room was connected to the other side of her weyr. Her head
turned and she watched K'ale's entrance, sizing him up. She'd need to ask K'ran
about this one later.

"Thank you ma'am," he smiled and bowed as he entered. He didn't want
to seem overly confident or familiar, besides that wasn't really in
his nature so he stood easily and walked toward the table. He wouldn't
take a seat until he was offered but he did quickly scan the sideboard
of refreshments before returning his eyes to the Lady of the Weyr.
"How can I help you?" His question was sincere and in a mellow
baritone that echoed his father's fine voice.

Rhosyn watched him, thinking about how brownriders were usually a
solid lot. They had a certain dependability which made them great for
support positions. Hopefully K'ale was like that. "It's come to my
attention that you have been spending time with our Lanniya. Besides
her sister, I didn't think she had many other friends outside of this
Weyr." Knowing he was likely running through he possibilities in his
own mind, Rhosyn didn't want to immediately let him know that Lanniya
was missing.

"So I was wondering, how well do you know her?"

He couldn't say he was surprised by the question. After all he was
somewhat intelligent. Besides his da had been through much the same
thing but had told him that the heart wants what it wants and
sometimes you just have to grin and bear it. So he took a breath
nodding. "I can't lie and say I wasn't expecting that question." He
smiled. "I had been coming to River Bluff frequently running messages
and passengers as the need arises. We just met in the Weyrbowl one day and
hit it off. We've talked some but we're still getting to know one another."

**So maybe he doesn't know her that well yet.** Still Rhosyn felt that she
needed to fish further before coming right out and asking him if he had spoken
to her recently. "And how well do you intend to get to know her?" The question
wasn't spoken with an accusatory tone, rather one of quiet curiosity.

That question took him a little by surprise, first that she'd asked it
and second that he hadn't asked it of himself. "Well, I'm not sure exactly," he
said tentatively.

Lanniya was very young and Rhosyn hoped the girl hadn't gotten the wrong idea
about this young man. Still, maybe it was a life experience she needed to have.
Rhosyn had her share of things that hadn't worked out and she had
learned to manage her expectations over the turns. "There are two
reasons I've asked you here today. The first is due to the fact that
in a few turns, Anaeryth will be Rising to mate for the first time.
Lanniya and I have had conversations about that and she understands at
some point preparations will need to be taken."

As a Dragonsfall brown, he likely wouldn't be in the chase, but that
didn't mean there might not be something else. "I've tried to encourage
her to get to know some of the riders here at River Bluff that would be safe for
her. Her family let me know she was also spending time with you.
You're Weyrblood and have good turns."

Her head came down just a bit and she let him know that meant she
thought he was following her line of reasoning. "I just want to make
sure that my youngest goldrider is taken care of." Lanniya had a
history of impulsive actions, after all. Faranth knew they didn't need
her first mating flight to be a disaster either.

"I understand ma'am," he said respectfully. "I don't wish to hurt her
any more than you wish it for her." He nodded, "I truly like her and
enjoy her company. However I do know the duty we owe her and if she
wishes to have another... experience, I will not stand in her way. If
she chooses me then I will be sure to take her gently where she wishes
to go." He took a deep breath and added. "Does that satisfy you?"

"Yes," she replied evenly, hoping she could trust the young man.
Brownriders tended to be alright, though, so maybe he would be true to
his color. "Have you spoken with or seen her recently?" It seemed like
a natural part of the conversation so as not to cause alarms, but
Rhosyn wondered if K'ale knew where she was or maybe if he had heard a
snippet of something it would give them something to go on.

"Not in the last few days," he said. "We did have dinner at the
Vintner Hall tavern last rest day though."

"Oh that's nice, I've been there a time or two. Was it a good dinner?"
Shifting in her seat, she kept her tone casual and continued it as a
conversation. "Sometimes it's hard to read Lanniya and I haven't yet
figured out what she plans to do for herself, where her real interests are.
Has she shared anything about her future plans with you or any of her
goals and interests?"

He laughed. "She's young," he shrugged. "For that matter so am I, as
my da frequently reminds me. But I know she struggles with the
hidework because she thinks it's boring. She doesn't see how important
it all is yet."

Having struggled already with the need to get Lanniya to focus, Rhosyn
didn't address that comment further. As it was, it was clear that K'ale hadn't
picked up on anything unusual Lanniya might have been planning. That meant
the girl was a bit secretive and had likely realized what she was doing wasn't
something she should be doing. And yet she had deliberately done it anyway.
That was enough to tip off her anger again. "Well it seems like you both have a
good friendship which is something she likely needs right now. It was very good
to meet you K'ale after hearing so much about you."

Taking that for a dismissal he rose with a smile and nodded. "Thank
you ma'am. Likewise." He waited for her to either rise or reach out
her hand for him to bow over.

Never one for much formality, Rhosyn reached to grab her water glass. She was
going to have to talk to Lenala soon. Maybe the girl had said something to her.
Time continued to slip by and that was bothering the Weyrwoman. "Feel free to
stop by the Dining Cavern before you go. You probably don't get too
much seafood at Dragonsfall."

~*~

Perhaps in a turn or so, it would be time. Maybe Lanniya would be
ready before then. Of course the brownrider would have to make more
visits to River Bluff for the time being to further that relationship.
Sighing as that thought brought about her anger again, Rhosyn looked
down at the next item on her list.
