She stared at the robust fare in front of her and wanted to abruptly
chunk it at the drudge who had brought it to her. The smell of the
gravy and the fruit made her want to lose what little she had eaten
the night before. "Take it away. I'm not hungry this morning." She
reached for her cup of water and sipped it, turning resolutely back to
the hides that were stacked neatly on her desk.
All she wanted to do at that moment was to return to her home and
rest, but there was little likelihood that she would be able to. She
glanced up as she noted that the drudge had not yet collected the
plate. "Yes? What do you want?" Her lips thinned in annoyance.
"Headwoman, you haven't eaten any breakfast for a sevenday." The
drudge shifted uncomfortably, clearly not wanting to be there, but
also needing confirmation on a question she'd been sent to ask. "The
cook is concerned if you think her meals are inadequate?"
"If I thought them inadequate, I'd have sent for her." Yriadha snipped
irritably. "Take the tray, leave the toast. It is simply a sour
stomach." For the seventh day in a row, Yriadha had to resort to
eating plain toast for breakfast and she heartily wished that whatever
was plaguing her stomach would end. She'd be thankful once she was
able to stomach a good meal in the morning to give her more energy.
Faranth knew that skipping breakfast was also making her over tired of
late.
"Yes, of course. Thank you." The drudge hurried to take the tray,
leaving a small plate of toast beside Yriadha's hides.
Yriadha ignored her, sighing and rubbing her temple as she picked up a
piece of toast and nibbled on it. These numbers weren't making sense
and her brain felt muddled. Frustrated, she took another bite of toast
and looked them over again, jotting down figures. As she ate and
worked, her stomach eased, but her tiredness did not.
She found herself blinking repeatedly, pouring herself klah in order
to keep her sleepiness at bay. It immediately quailed her stomach and
she scowled, stubbornly downing it and moving quickly to nibble at
another piece of toast. She would get through this morning, by
Faranth. She would get what she needed to done and then perhaps, after
lunch hour, she'd be able to take a quick nap.
**I am getting old. I haven't needed to nap since I was carrying
Humari.** It was a disgruntled thought. Every morning it seemed like
she found another slight crease around the corners of her eyes. It
didn't bother Bryvin at least, who regularly took great pleasure in
her still slim body.
She yawned, her brain slowly emerging from the mush in order to try to
make sense of what she had written just the day before. Her brow knit
as the passing thought she had had filtered through her mind once
again. **Not since I was carrying Humari. ** She ignored it, pushing
the thought away, but it came back again, persistent.
She blinked as her brain began to function further and the figures in
front of her eyes faded away as her mind began to focus sharply. When
_was_ the last time she'd had a cycle? It had been more than a month.
Perhaps two. She hadn't even thought about it. After all, she wasn't
getting any younger. Maybe she was facing the change that all women
eventually did.
But...
